Endless Sky is a beautiful contemporary lakeside holiday cottage for eight at Lower Mill Estate in the Cotswolds, with four bedrooms, three bathrooms and water views from almost every level. The house makes the most of its position. Glass doors spanning the first-floor living room fold back onto a balcony overlooking the lake, bedrooms downstairs open onto wraparound decking, and right at the top is a large roof terrace furnished for long days outside. There's a gas barbecue, dining table, sofas and loungers up there, with plenty of space to follow the sun or sit out after dinner. Interiors are modern but practical enough for family life. The kitchen shares the first floor with the dining and sitting areas; a wood burner adds warmth on colder evenings, and a separate utility room downstairs handles the less glamorous side of holidays by the water. One dog is welcome too.
Lower Mill Estate is a place where families can park the car and forget about it for a while. Around 450 acres of lakes, woodland and nature reserve are crossed by footpaths and cycle routes, and the Activity Hub hires bikes as well as kayaks, canoes and paddleboards. You can head onto the water, play tennis, go fishing on Mill Lake or take younger children to the playgrounds and indoor soft play. There are quieter pleasures too. Otters, deer, owls and bats live within the reserve, along with the Eurasian beavers for which Lower Mill has become particularly well known. Some days can be as simple as choosing a trail, packing a picnic and seeing where you end up.
Complimentary access to the Leisure & Wellness Club is included with a stay at Endless Sky. Its 20-metre indoor and outdoor heated pools give swimming a rather different feel from the average holiday complex, and there's also a sauna, steam room, gym and eco pool. Treatments can be booked separately. When nobody wants to cook, Ballihoo is on the estate for breakfast, lunch and dinner, while the Pizza Shack is handy for an uncomplicated supper back at the house. There's a small marketplace for essentials, and the Baker's Arms at Somerford Keynes is around a 15-minute walk away. That combination of independence and on-site facilities is a large part of Lower Mill's appeal, particularly when several generations are holidaying together.
Leaving the estate opens up a different side of the Cotswolds. Cirencester is close enough for a morning browsing its independent shops and cafés, with the Corinium Museum worth adding to the itinerary, while Tetbury is known for antiques, interiors and handsome honey-coloured streets. Westonbirt Arboretum and Cotswold Wildlife Park are excellent family days out, and Bibury, Bourton-on-the-Water and other well-known Cotswold villages are within reach. After a busy day out, returning to the water at Lower Mill provides a welcome change of pace. Head upstairs, light the barbecue and claim a lounger on the roof terrace before somebody else does.

Head up another level, and you'll find one of the house's best spaces. The large roof terrace has a gas barbecue, an outdoor dining table, a sofa, and sun loungers, all behind toughened-glass balustrades that leave the lake views uninterrupted. Gas for the barbecue is provided.
