About Rough Top Holiday Cottage

Rough Top Cottage is the sort of place where all of your family can feel at home, even the four-legged ones. The welcoming stone cottage is extremely dog-friendly and has sensational views and lots of fantastic walks accessible straight from the door. Rough Top is near the popular market town of Hebden Bridge, home of the BBC series Happy Valley, on the Yorkshire / Lancashire border and close to some of the regions favourite sights and attractions. It sleeps five people in three bedrooms and boasts lots of original features that include an open fireplace. It's a blissful setting in every season, giving you, your family and friends the opportunity to escape to the beauty of the Yorkshire countryside without being isolated from its towns and villages.

Yorkshire's raw, rugged beauty has inspired countless artists and writers, but you don't need to paint it or write about it to enjoy its glorious moors and mountains. Rough Top is a favourite with walkers and cyclists as it is surrounded by fantastic footpaths and trails like the one to Bridestone’s Rocks, which is popular for climbing and scrambling. Follow the Rochdale Canal to Walsden, or walk along the packhorse trail to the Stoodley Pike Monument. National Trust Hardcastle Craggs is within easy reach, or take the hour-long circular route from the cottage to Redmires Waterfall, which is very dog-friendly. The Calderdale Way, Mary Towneley Loop and Pennine Way are all within easy reach. You can walk along the canal path to Fielden Wharf.

Hebden Bridge is close to the cottage with its attractive historic buildings, artisan shops, eateries, galleries and canal waterfront. Heptonstall with its cobbled streets and museum is mid-way between the cottage and Hebden Bridge and Todmorden is less than four miles away offering yet more amenities and a magnificent Grade I listed Town Hall, well worth seeing with a spectacular ballroom and the Heritage Centre. There are more places to eat, drink and shop in the lively town of Halifax, where you can browse happily in the Victorian Borough Market and buy from local butchers, bakers, florists and other traditional shops. The world renowned Piece Hall and Eureka Museum are anot to missed when in Halifax, as is Shibden Hall, the home of Anne Lister and filmset for Gentlemen Jack.

Other places to visit include Hollingworth Lake and Burnley; or spend the day in Manchester which is accessible by train from Todmorden. Haworth is also within driving distance, where the Bronte siblings lived and wrote famous works, including Wuthering Heights. In addition to the Bronte Parsonage, the friendly town has a good choice of independent shops, is a terminus for the heritage Worth Valley Steam Railway, and hosts a brilliant 1940s festival that attracts visitors from around the world every year.

You will never run out of things to do when you stay at Rough Top. It's available for bookings all year round.

Location (Yorkshire)

Accommodation Comprises:

Rough Top is a traditional stone farmhouse (semi-detached) sympathetically updated to suit modern visitors without losing its period charm. Accommodation is over two levels.

Downstairs:

  • A huge pine table is at the centre of the farmhouse kitchen. It seats up to eight guests with lots of room for serving dishes, meaning you can invite friends for dinner. The antique pine dresser holds daily crockery as well as a collection of decorative plates. Cooking for a hungry family is easy thanks to a double oven, and there's also a dishwasher to make swift work of clearing up. It's a room where you will happily spend hours cooking, eating and chatting over a strong cup of Yorkshire tea and a wedge of cake. French doors open onto the patio.
  • Comfortable leather sofas are positioned around the open fire in the living room, which also has a TV with a DVD player. The owner has provided a selection of family-friendly games and books, including books about the local area.
  • Quiet bedroom with original oak beams and wooden shutters. The room has a pine single bed, bedside table with a reading light, a chest of drawers and a mirror.
  • Shower room with a walk-in shower, heated towel rail, WC and a hand-basin. Soap, hand cream and thick bath towels are all provided.

Upstairs:

  • Twin bedroom with two full-sized single beds separated by a nightstand with reading light. A chest of drawers and a wardrobe provide lots of storage for guests to be able to unpack.
  • Shower room with a walk-in shower, WC and a hand-basin.

Outside: The large fenced side garden has a patio with garden furniture and there is another patio accessed via French doors from the kitchen which also has an outdoor table and chairs, and potted plants and herbs.
