Drifter Cottage makes the beach central to your holiday. Filey Bay fills the windows of this three-bedroom beachfront holiday cottage, whether you're eating at the dining table, sitting in the living room or still in the king-size bed upstairs. Sunrise watchers have an especially good deal. Sleeping six, Drifter has a king bedroom with en-suite shower room, a double with views towards Filey Brigg and Coble Landing, and a third room with sturdy oak bunks: a double on the bottom and single above. Downstairs, two sofas face a 50-inch Smart TV, while a real-flame gas stove and central heating keep the house warm outside summer. The kitchen covers the practicalities with an oven, ceramic hob, microwave, fridge/freezer, dishwasher and washer-dryer. There's even a bench beneath the front window when you want the view without the glass in between. Free unrestricted roadside parking (subject to availability) is opposite. For a pint, Fado & Tide is about five minutes away and dog-friendly; Bonhommes and the Belle Vue are around eight minutes on foot. There is easy online availability/booking on the owner's website.
Filey has managed to keep more breathing space along its seafront than many Yorkshire resorts, and Drifter is right in the middle of the part worth slowing down for. The long sandy beach runs between Filey Brigg and Flamborough Head, with a gentle slope into the sea and lifeguard cover in summer. Coble Landing is where the fishing boats and lifeboat launch, with a small amusement arcade, cafés and crazy golf nearby rather than a wall of seafront attractions. Up on the cliff, Crescent Gardens looks across the bay; Glen Gardens adds a boating lake and play area. Filey Brigg is the obvious walk when the tide allows, with rock pools, fishing spots and chances to see seals, porpoises or dolphins offshore. The town centre is easy to reach on foot and still has a strong independent streak, with butchers, bakers, greengrocers, cafés, pubs and fish-and-chip shops alongside the everyday supermarkets. Walkers can also pick up the Cleveland Way and Yorkshire Wolds Way, which meet in Filey.
There's plenty more coastline when you're ready to leave Filey Bay for the day. RSPB Bempton Cliffs is one of the standouts, with towering sea cliffs and huge seabird colonies; gannets, guillemots and razorbills are among the regulars, with puffins possible in season. Continue around Flamborough Head for cliff walks between North Landing, the lighthouse and South Landing. Scarborough changes the mood completely, adding two bays, a harbour and a medieval castle high on the headland, while Bridlington has broad beaches and Sewerby's clifftop parkland nearby. Whitby and Robin Hood's Bay make longer days out north along the coast. Families wanting something away from the sea can head inland to North Yorkshire Water Park for water and land-based activities. Back at Drifter, though, the best attraction remains stubbornly simple: Filey Bay is still there outside the window, and you don't need to drive anywhere to see it.
