Lavender House gives two people the space of a proper Whitby house rather than squeezing a coastal break into a studio or apartment. The one-bedroom holiday cottage is light and roomy, with a large bay window in the lounge, a separate dining room and a galley kitchen alongside it. Upstairs, the 5ft king-size bedroom has an original decorative fireplace and a neutral, uncluttered feel; unusually, it also has a large shower cubicle, plus a separate bathroom with a bath. A small courtyard provides some outside space, two dogs are welcome, and the broadband is impressively quick at an owner-reported 498Mbps download speed. Unrestricted parking is available on Elgin Street and neighbouring roads, subject to space availability. Food and a pint don't require the car: the Waiting Room and Station Inn are around ten minutes away on foot, while the Railway Chippy is just around the corner.
Whitby is close enough to reach on foot from Lavender House, but not so close that every outing begins in the thick of the busiest harbour streets. Allow around 10–15 minutes to reach the centre, then choose your direction. Follow the River Esk towards the harbour for boat trips and fish and chips, cross into the old town for cobbled lanes and independent shops, or tackle the 199 Steps to St Mary's Church and Whitby Abbey. The Captain Cook Memorial Museum is less than a mile from the house and tells another side of Whitby's maritime story. Across the harbour, the West Cliff has the Whalebone Arch and views back towards the abbey, while the beach runs north towards Sandsend. Whitby's Dracula connections add a darker strand to the town's history, but there's much more going on here than Goth weekends and Bram Stoker. Fishing heritage, jet jewellery, old pubs and the working harbour give you plenty to notice simply by wandering.
Once you've explored Whitby on foot, the surrounding coast and North York Moors open up a very different set of days. The National Park begins only a couple of miles away, with moorland roads, walking trails and villages inland. Heritage trains on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway connect Whitby with Grosmont and Pickering, turning a trip across the moors into part of the experience. Along the coast, Robin Hood's Bay packs steep lanes and old fishing cottages into a village above the shore, while Sandsend is an easy choice for more beach time. Carry on north for Runswick Bay and Staithes, where houses crowd around the old harbour beneath the cliffs. Walkers can pick up sections of the Cleveland Way rather than committing to the whole route. Then it's back to Whitby – perhaps via the chippy around the corner – with no need to invent an elaborate evening plan.
