Grange Farm Holiday Cottage is a hit with families and groups of friends who love that its relaxed and easygoing style still feels unique. The 200-year-old farmhouse can sleep up to 14 people in five bedrooms, and its location makes it perfect for exploring both the beautiful Yorkshire coast and the stunning North Yorkshire Moors National Park. The Hare and Hounds gastropub is also within walking distance adding to the appeal.
Grange Farm is in High Hawkser - a friendly village that is a short drive (or one hour walk) from the coast at Whitby. The old Scarborough to Whitby railway line has been transformed into a popular traffic-free route, passing through the village and providing stunning views of the North Yorkshire and Cleveland Heritage coast and countryside for remarkably little effort for walkers, cyclists and horse riders. Another recommended walk is the route from the village to Robin Hoods Bay, taking in a mere 3.7 miles of the 109-mile Cleveland Way footpath that stretches around the border of the National Park from Helmsley in the west, up to Saltburn-by-the-Sea and south to Scarborough and Filey.
Grange Farm is conveniently close to some of the area’s best attractions yet peacefully removed from summer crowds and day trippers. At just 2.5 miles from the cottage, Whitby is within reach by foot or bicycle if you prefer not to drive, or you can use the regular bus service that runs through the village. There is plenty here to keep everyone happy including a visit to the ruins of Whitby Abbey, which helped inspire Bram Stoker’s setting for his famous gothic horror novel, Dracula, in 1890. The famous explorer, Captain Cook, was an apprentice in Whitby and his former home is now a museum celebrating his life. Whitby also has several other museums and galleries, as well as plenty of shops and places to eat and drink.
Whitby is one of the best-known beaches on the North Yorkshire Coast, with others including Runswick Bay (great for families), Kettleness (good for fossils) and Sandsend. Upgang can be accessed via a path leading down from the golf course and is good if you want to avoid summer crowds, or set up at Whitby Tate Hill Beach at around sunset and cook a supper of sausages over a campfire. Like Whitby, Robin Hoods Bay is also just over two miles from Grange Farm and provides a wide choice of places to shop, eat and drink. It is part of the Dinosaur Coast and, while the walk back up to the car (if you drive) can feel steep at the end of a fun day, the unspoiled, rugged beauty of this part of the coast more than makes up for it.
Once you have booked your stay at Grange Farm, then the rest of your holiday plans will fall easily into place. It is a wonderful location at any time of year, whether you are getting all the kids and cousins together for a summer holiday by the beach, are catching up with old friends for long walks and relaxed lunches in country pubs, or need somewhere spacious to celebrate Christmas with all your favourite people.
