About The Byres

The Byres is on Selside Farm in a peaceful corner of the Yorkshire Dales Three Peaks area, at the end of a farm track and surrounded by a picturesque patchwork of fields, drystone walls and vast open skies. The pretty semi-detached barn conversion has space for six people to sleep in three bedrooms and is a favourite with families and couples (especially walkers) who enjoy the space and serenity of the countryside.

This welcoming rural retreat is in Selside in the Yorkshire Dales National Park and just three miles north of Horton-in-Ribblesdale and a few miles further to the bustling yet small market town of Settle. The Lake District National Park is also within an hour's drive opening up a host of additional attractions for a day trip out.

There are some beautiful walks throughout the Three Peaks area (Ingleborough, Whernside and Penyghent) as well as walks to enjoy straight from the front door. The sweeping country lanes are good for cyclists, making The Byres popular with outdoor enthusiasts at any time of the year.

Settle is a small but thriving market town with an excellent choice of pubs, restaurants, cafes and shops for provisions, as well as a weekly market on a Tuesday. Closer to home, the attractive village of Horton-in-Ribblesdale (a popular point for starting the Three Peaks Walk) offers two pubs plus a cafe and tea room.

Nearby attractions include the Ingleton Water Falls Trail (a beautiful 4.3 mile circular walk), White Scar Caves (the country's longest show cave), Ingleborough Cave, Clapham Wood, Malham Tarn and Malham Cove (used as a filmset in the Harry Potter film Deathly Hallows), Gordale Scar and Stainforth Foss. A journey on the world famous Settle-Carlisle Railway is also a must and a wonderful way to enjoy the landscape, providing easy access to places like Carlisle, Leeds, York and Ribblesdale without having to drive.

Selside may appear calm and peaceful, and it is both of these things, but look a little closer and you have access to a wealth of adventure and excitement. Whether it is the thrill of scaling a mountain peak, the satisfaction that comes from pushing yourself on a challenging ride through new terrain, or the joy at finding a cafe where the homemade cake rivals anything Mary Berry could make, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

The Byres is not only a great place for a holiday but it is also easy to access, being 8 miles from the A65 and three quarters of an hour from the M6. It does not matter if you are coming north from Liverpool and Manchester, south from Carlisle or Scotland, or anywhere in between, you can have your feet up with a cup of tea in your hand and a beautiful view in front of you before you know it.

Accommodation Comprises:

Accommodation at The Byres is over two levels with a traditional layout. It is in a little hamlet on a short lane next to the owner's farmhouse and, although they are close by if you need anything, guests can enjoy peace and privacy.

  • Enter the cottage through an enclosed glass porch where there is space to leave muddy boots and hang up your coat. There is also a storage space for logs so you do not have to go outside for firewood in the dark.
  • Snuggle up in front of the fire on chilly evenings as you watch television or a DVD after dinner, or play a game or read a book from one of the collection provided by the owner. The living room has a real coal and wood fireplace with comfortable couches and armchairs facing it.
  • The kitchen/dining room is a welcoming space. The dining table has room for six people, while the kitchen has everything you need to cater for families or smaller groups. The owners provide a welcome pack with tea, coffee and milk so that you can put the kettle on before you unpack and settle in.
  • Separate dining room with table and chairs plus large dresser.

  • There is a kingsized bed in the master bedroom, and all of the bedrooms have exposed beams with good storage.
  • Two further bedrooms, one with a double bed and the other with two singles, are spacious and comfortable, with bedside tables, reading lights and ample storage so you can unpack for the duration of your stay.
  • The family bathroom has a large bath, separate walk-in shower, WC and handbasin. The owners can also provide a toilet seat and step if you are staying with young children.

Outside: There are two outdoor patios so you can move with the sun. There is garden furniture for relaxing, as well as a barbecue so you can enjoy the long summer evenings with meals alfresco. A separate lawn area is perfect for playing outside or relaxing in the sunshine. A lockable shed next to the cottage has a tumble drier, and also offers secure storage for bikes. There is off-street parking for up to two cars.

Additional Information: The Byres has electric storage heating and double glazing, and all utilities, linen and towels are included. The owners can provide a highchair, cot, stairgate and fire guard if needed. One well-behaved dog is welcome at an additional charge of £12 per week. Discounts offered for couples staying in off-peak season. No smoking is allowed in The Byres. Short breaks available out of peak season with weekends charged at £260.
