About Redmire Barn

Redmire Barn is the perfect place from which to explore and enjoy the beautiful Yorkshire Dales National Park. The charming traditional Dales barn conversion which was built in 1711 is in Hawkswick with a riverside garden and amazing views of Littondale. The owners have done an incredible job of creating a comfortable, stylish and welcoming cottage that suits modern lifestyles while retaining original features that give the barn conversion its character. There are two lovely ensuite king-size bedrooms sleeping up to four adults (plus two infants under the age of two in cots) with zip-linked beds that can be made up as doubles or twins to provide flexible sleeping with room for a cot in each, so ideal for families and friends as well as couples.

Hawkswick is utterly beautiful in every season and almost every type of weather. It is quieter than the much larger neighbouring Wharfdale, which means you'll have even more space to enjoy the spectacular views and sense of enormous space. An ancient glacier shaped the landscape with the dale's highest peak, Pen-y-Ghent, one of the Yorkshire Three Peaks, and Ingleborough, the second highest mountain in the Yorkshire Dales. Not forgetting the spectacular Great Whernside. The scenery underground is no less spectacular. The area is a favourite for caving with Stump Cross Caverns, White Scar caves and Boreham Cave system are all within easy reach. For the 'outdoorsy' type, you'll find the area lends itself to many other activities; such as climbing, The cottage is less than two miles from Arncliffe. You can walk to the friendly Falcon pub, which served as the original "Woolpack" in Emmerdale and where beer is still served from traditional jugs.

Walking (hiking) and cycling are two popular activities for both locals and visitors. There is a huge choice of footpaths, cycling routes made famous by the Tour de France and Tour de Yorkshire. Serious hikers can challenge themselves to complete the Yorkshire Three Peaks walk, while those seeking less of a challenge can enjoy the beauty of a walk along the river. The views around Redmire Barn stretch to Malham and Kinsey will have you stopping not only to catch your breath but also to marvel at the sheer scale and magnificence of the landscape. There are also an abundance of breathtaking water-fall walks in the surrounding area, such as Janet's Foss/ Ingleton fall walk/ and the Aysgarth falls. Anglers can try their skills in the River Skirfare. This river was named by the Vikings (skirr meaning "clear") and flows beside the cottage. It's known as a tricky stretch of water but excellent for wild brown trout, whose fishing season is between March and September. Wild water swimming is another fun and popular activity amongst locals and visitors alike, with a famous natural bathing spot two miles up-river from the barn called 'Water-babies' said to be the inspiration for the film/novel by Charles Kingsley. Harry Potter fans will enjoy spotting famous scenes from the films. The enjoyment does not need to stop when the sun sets as the Littondale Valley is part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park Dark Sky Reserve - the largest of its kind in the UK with a number of Dark Sky events throughout the year.

Redmire Barn is just perfect if you seek peace and tranquility, but it is not completely cut off. Skipton with its medieval castle is only 13 miles south of the cottage, with a wide choice of places to eat, drink and shop. Grassington and kettlewell are both within 10 mins drive. You're within easy reach of places like Malham Cove and Gordale Scar, with plenty of typical dales villages and towns scattered around to visit like the spa town of Harrogate, Wendsleydale, Hawes and Settle.

Location (The Yorkshire Dales)

Accommodation Comprises:

Redmire Barn dates from the early 1700s. It was built to last, with thick stone walls and solid oak beams that have stood the test of time. Contemporary comforts include USB charging points, WiFi, underfloor heating in the kitchen and efficient central heating.

Downstairs:

  • Open plan living/dining room with an armchair and a plush three-four seater sofa that is perfect for a sneaky snooze. There's a log burner for winter and a Smart TV for lazy film nights. The rustic wood dining table seats eight people next to French doors that open onto the private terrace. There's an antique bar-billiards table as well.
  • You'll find everything you need for self-catering in the well-equipped kitchen, including a thoughtful welcome pack, a De Longhi coffee machine and a dishwasher. Although the kitchen is sleek and modern, it suits the cottage perfectly.

Upstairs:

  • Both bedrooms are on the first floor. Each room is a spacious double with zip-link kingsize beds that can be separated into two single beds if preferred. Please let the owner know your required layout when booking.
  • Each ensuite has a shower, WC and a handbasin. As with the kitchen, their contemporary style is a fitting contrast to the barn's age and the oak beams in the bedrooms.

Outside: The barn has a private terrace with a barbecue, garden furniture and a ping-pong table. The private south facing river-bank garden is the perfect spot to create memories and set up a game of croquet or archery with family or friends. At night, light the fire pit and stargaze for hours under skies full of brilliant stars. The owners live next door and keep free-range chickens. You may hear them clucking in the garden as you laze on sun loungers on the lawn. There is secure bike storage and off-street parking.

Additional Information: Utilities, WiFi, bed linen and bath towels are all included. A high chair, fireguard, extra large bed guard, two stair gates and travel cot available (please speak to the owners about bedding for the travel cot as they ask guests to provide their own for infants 6 months and under for health and safety reasons).
