About Mill Fosse Cottage

Mill Fosse Cottage is so beautiful that you will find it difficult to leave. Made from local Yorkshire stone in the early 17th Century, this charming cottage sits beside the flowing waters of the Mill Race and waterfall, giving guests a unique opportunity to stay in what was once part of the original Wensleydale Creamery. The owners of this dog-friendly cottage, which sleeps two people in one bedroom, have left no detail unchecked in their quest to create the perfect retreat where couples can escape the rest of the world for a few days to relax and enjoy the pleasure of uninterrupted time together in one of England's loveliest corners. Shops, cafes and excellent pubs like The White Hart are all within a couple of minutes' walk of the front door, yet the cottage's location is private and peaceful.

Hawes is fantastic as a holiday destination. The pretty market town is in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park and surrounded by stunning scenery with plenty of opportunities for being active outdoors. All that walking, horse riding and mountain biking can work up a fierce appetite, but that is not a problem because not only are there lots of excellent places to eat and drink, but there is a weekly market every Tuesday where you can buy locally produced ingredients to cook at home, and the world-famous Wensleydale Creamery which has an excellent shop selling every type of Wensleydale cheese plus a great variety of goodies to accompany it. Lazy days can be spent browsing the Dales Countryside Museum and the town's galleries and antique shops.

Walking is one of the easiest ways to immerse yourself in this incredible landscape. Even if your time in Hawes is limited, you will not regret making time to see Aysgarth Falls, where the waterfall and surrounding woodland captivated some of Britain's most beloved poets and artists and which will capture your heart as well. Hardraw Falls are smaller but no less lovely, with the added benefit of being next to a favourite country pub. There are fantastic walks from the front door - it is the sort of place you can easily park your car and forget about driving for the duration of your stay if you want.

Kendal, Windermere and Lake District National Park are within an hour's easy drive, as are the Ingleborough Caves and Grassington. A little further away are Ripon and Harrogate, and even places like York and Castle Howard are within reach if you can bear to leave the comfort of Mill Fosse Cottage.

Location (The Yorkshire Dales)

Mill Fosse Cottage has been sympathetically converted from an early 17th Century creamery, with the original features such as thick stone walls, flagstone floors and oak beams being carefully combined with modern comforts such as underfloor heating and fast WiFi.

Accommodation is split across three floors and comprises:

  • The sitting room is a welcoming, comfortable place to relax after your journey. The dual aspect allows in lots of natural light, while the stable door opens to overlook Gayle Beck and waterfall. A deep sofa is ideal for flopping into and watching the smart TV with Netflix or listen to music on the digital sound system, or you may prefer to put your feet up with a glass of wine and chat quietly in front of the crackling log burner.
  • Entrance hall and dining room with flagged floors and beamed ceiling.
  • The bespoke cabinets have been handcrafted especially for Mill Fosse's kitchen, perfectly complementing the Everhot enamel range. Guests will find everything they need for self-catering in the kitchen, including a dishwasher.
  • Laundry facilities include a washer/dryer, iron and ironing board.
  • The master bedroom features a vaulted ceiling, with the centrepiece being a king-sized Hypnos bed. The window overlooks the mill race and waterfall, so you can fall asleep and wake up to the gentle sound of the water flowing below.
  • A contemporary stone clad bathroom features underfloor heating, a spacious shower, WC and handbasin.

Outside: A Yorkshire stone bench sits at the front of the cottage, giving guests an outdoor space to relax and enjoy the view. There is private, off-road parking for one car.

Additional Information: All utilities, WiFi, linen and towels are included. Short breaks are possible all year round, with a minimum stay of three nights. Up to two well-behaved dogs are welcome for a small surcharge. Smoking is not permitted.
