Tree Tops lives up to its name. The chalet perches in woodland where large sliding doors genuinely give you the feeling of being among the trees. Sleeping six across two bedrooms (one double, one twin) plus a sofa bed, this eco-friendly chalet occupies a peaceful spot, yet Uppermill's centre is just two minutes on foot. The views look up toward the Saddleworth hills and Pots and Pans war memorial, and down over the River Tame and canal where you can watch narrowboats chugging past. The wood burner (a starter pack of free logs, kindling, and lighters included) makes this cosy for autumn and winter breaks. Your private deck catches good light through the day, and the seeded roof grows into the hillside so the whole building blends into the woodland. The Church Inn up the hill brews its own award-winning Saddleworth ales and welcomes dogs by the log fires, while The Waggon down on the high street does excellent food in more contemporary surroundings.
Uppermill is part of a cluster of Pennine villages. The high street comes alive at weekends with independent boutiques, cafes, and a brilliant mix of old and new pubs. Sorella and Kobe serve fantastic food, while Reclamation Room doubles as a creative space and cafe where you can buy art straight off the walls. Albion Farm Shop uses Saddleworth ingredients for their hearty farmer's breakfasts and giant burgers. Grandpa Greene's ice cream has been made with double cream from local Friesian cows since 1920 - the canal-side parlour in Diggle is worth the walk for a cone. The Old Bell Inn in Delph holds a Guinness World Record with 1,559 different gins lined up in its emporium. The Huddersfield Narrow Canal provides towpath walking through all the villages without touching a road, while Saddleworth Museum tells the textile and milling story in an old mill building originally used to make yarn.
The Peak District and moorland start right here. Dovestone Reservoir is within walking distance, and the circular route around it covers about 4km with spectacular scenery - the reservoir sits in a bowl surrounded by moorland and hills. The RSPB manages this as a sanctuary, so you'll see serious birdwatchers with their binoculars and tripods, and mountain hares live up on the moor. The Pots and Pans walk climbs to a war memorial above Uppermill that genuinely looks like a pot and pan when you're standing under it. The Pennine Way runs three miles away for long-distance walkers tackling Britain's most challenging National Trail. Other Saddleworth villages are worth exploring - Dobcross has The Swan Inn, where the cheese and onion pie is legendary, Delph has that record-breaking gin collection, and Diggle with Grandpa Greene's ice cream parlour are strung along the canal like charms on a bracelet. Various events happen throughout the year, including Yanks weekend, when everything goes back to the 1940s with vintage military vehicles, costumes, and parades. Manchester is 35 minutes by car when you need museums, proper shopping, restaurants, or nightlife. Active families and dog owners get countryside walking, village pubs, independent shopping, and city access all from one well-placed base.
When booked with neighbouring Stepping Stones the chalets can sleep up to 12 guests.
