Harbour Watch enjoys a wonderful waterside position at Whitehall Landing, overlooking the marina where the River Esk meets the harbour on its journey to the North Sea. Sleeping four guests in two bedrooms with two bathrooms, this ground-floor apartment combines modern comfort with one of Whitby's most appealing locations. The flat is set in scenic grounds with communal gardens with waterfront views, walks along the river and an enclosed children's small playground. Watching boats drift past with a morning coffee quickly becomes part of the holiday routine, while the private parking space removes one of Whitby's biggest challenges. The holiday home is within easy walking distance of the town centre, harbour and beach, making it easy to leave the car behind for much of your stay. A five-minute stroll takes you to local favourites including The Middle Earth Tavern and The Fleece Inn, while the harbourfront restaurants, cafés and fish and chip shops are only a little further away.
Whitby has a knack for offering something different every time you visit. One day might be spent wandering the narrow streets of the old town, browsing independent shops selling Whitby jet jewellery and stopping for coffee beside the harbour. The next could involve climbing the famous 199 Steps to St Mary's Church and the dramatic ruins of Whitby Abbey, which loom above the town and inspired Bram Stoker's Dracula. The sandy beach and pier are less than a mile from Harbour Watch, making spontaneous seaside walks easy. You can walk along the sandy beach from Whitby to Sandsend when the tide is out, passing colourful beach huts, beach cafes and surfing spots. You can then walk back along the cliff top or there is a good coastal bus service if you want to rest your legs. The Whitby coastal area is known as the “dinosaur coast” and is excellent for fossil hunting. Take one of the regular sightseeing cruises or wildlife excursions from the harbour, and tour the Captain Cook Memorial Museum for a fascinating insight into Whitby's maritime history. The town's festivals, gothic heritage and thriving food scene mean there's usually something happening throughout the year.
The longer you spend on this stretch of coast, the more reasons you find to linger. A ten-minute drive brings you to Robin Hood's Bay, where narrow passageways tumble down towards the sea and rock pools appear when the tide retreats. Staithes feels completely different again, with its cluster of cottages wrapped around a working harbour that once inspired artists and explorers. If walking boots have made it into your suitcase, pick up the Cleveland Way from Whitby and follow the cliffs north or south, stopping to watch seabirds wheeling above the waves. Inland, the scenery changes once more as the North York Moors replace the coastline with wide open heather moorland, hidden valleys and villages that seem largely untouched by time. Back in Whitby, evenings are easily spent beside the harbour watching fishing boats return with the day's catch or finding a table in one of the town's seafood restaurants before strolling back along the marina to Harbour Watch.
