About Fort Cottage 2

Fort Cottages occupy what is arguably the loveliest spot in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. Directly overlooking Solva Harbour and close to St Bride’s Bay and the historic city of St David’s, the 17th Century fisherman’s cottages have been sympathetically restored and refurbished to suit modern couples and families who want to get as close as possible to the natural beauty that is the hallmark of west Wales. The cottages each sleep four people in two bedrooms and are within a ten-minute walk of the centre of Solva.

Solva is an incredibly picturesque village. The famous Pembrokeshire Coast Footpath runs through the village (and past the front door of Fort Cottages) and the friendly locals are happy to extend a hospitable welcome to visitors whether they are just passing through or using Solva as a base to explore Pembrokeshire. At low tide, the river all but disappears leaving a vast expanse of sand with rock pools and caves visible. Fishing, sailing and canoeing are all popular activities. The village has a general store, four pubs and three cafes and restaurants.

The cottages are only three miles from St Davids, and you can reach it via the Coastal Footpath if you prefer not to drive or cycle. Granted city status thanks to its cathedral, St Davids is really more of a large village with a thriving artistic community. The cathedral is stunning, and the site has been a place of pilgrimage for hundreds of years. Contrasting with the cathedral’s towering magnificence, the medieval Bishop’s Palace is no more than a romantic ruin, but still a lovely spot. It is the place where you can take a boat tour to Ramsey Island to see dolphins and seabirds.

If you have never been to Pembrokeshire before, you may be taken aback by just how gorgeous the beaches are, especially if you want to set your deckchair up in the morning and not leave the beach until the sun sets over the water. At two miles long, you will not struggle to find a space to spread out on nearby Newgale Beach. It is popular with surfers and kite surfing, and surfing schools run during the summer and school holidays. Caerfai is a smaller, quieter option without any amenities, while Porthlysgi is very secluded and only accessible via the Coastal Footpath. Broadhaven is ideal for families while surfers will make a beeline for Whitesands.

With its spectacular views, period charm and proximity to the village, Fort Cottages are perfect for couples, families and friends searching for an old-fashioned beach holiday in a home you can feel welcoming you as you step over the threshold.

Location (The Pembrokeshire Coast)

Fort Cottage 2 is an 18th Century building that retains many original features including exposed beams and low ceilings, but which has been updated to be comfortable for modern guests. Accommodation is over two levels which are connected by a steep staircase that is not suitable for young children or those with mobility issues and beautiful sea views can be enjoyed from the main living rooms.

Accommodation Comprises:

Downstairs:

  • Entry is through a small hallway leading into the living room.
  • Beamed living room with comfortable seating close to the fireplace with wood burner, television and DVD player.
  • Kitchen / diner well-equipped for self-catering with enough crockery and cutlery for four people plus table with seating for four guests.
  • Family bathroom with a shower above the bath, WC and handbasin.

Upstairs:

  • There is no landing, so the stairs go directly into the master bedroom which has a double bed, dressing table and bedside table and reading light. A dormer window is ideal for stargazing and, while the ceiling is pitched with exposed beams, there is ample headroom.
  • Twin bedroom accessed via the double room again with a pitched ceiling and dormer window.

Outside: The terraced garden is shared with Fort Cottage 1. It overlooks the harbour and has a variety of seating, including a table and benches. There is a shared utility room at the rear of the cottages with shared laundry facilities. The cottage has off-street parking.

Additional Information: Fort Cottages are adjoining and can be hired together to accommodate up to eight guests, depending on availability. Utilities are provided but guests are required to bring bed linen and towels. The cottage has central heating. Well behaved pets are considered, so please enquire with the owner. No smoking. Fort Cottages are not suitable for young children due to terraced gardens.
