Bilsdale Cottage is a pretty 18th Century former farm building now transformed into a welcoming holiday cottage that sleeps four people in two bedrooms and is perfect for families, couples and individuals who crave the peace and solitude that a holiday in the Yorkshire countryside brings. It is one of four fantastic holiday cottages at Sproxton Hall Cottages (please click through to the owners website for details on the other cottages available) on the edge of the North York Moors National Park and enjoys extensive views across the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Sproxton is a tiny community two miles south of the picturesque town of Helmsley where there is a supermarket, baker, and an award-winning butchery as well as excellent cafes, pubs and restaurants so you have flexibility about whether you want to self-cater or dine out. Nearly every business is proudly owned and run by locals, which gives the town a welcoming character that is lacking from so many generic High Streets. Be sure to visit Hunters in Market Place, officially voted as Britain's Best Small Shop.
Once you have stocked up with food and drink (and maybe the odd antique!), then it will be time to start exploring further afield. There is a myriad of footpaths around the cottage and close by which cross moors and countryside and offer some of the best views in the north of England. Bridleways and cycling routes are also plentiful, making this a favourite destination for mountain bikers and road cyclists as well.
Sproxton Hall is on a private road in a quiet location, yet conveniently close to main roads that make it easy to reach places like Thirsk, Pickering and Castle Howard. The ancient city of York is 22 miles away, while Whitby and Scarborough are not much further. Your holiday at Bilsdale Cottage can include spectacular "big sky" views, challenging walks, a quiet pint of beer brewed down the road from the local pub, walking around real castles and building your own version in the sand.
It never feels as if you are merely passing through Yorkshire, more like you are leaving an emotional reminder for yourself that you will have to return because, however long your stay, there is always more to discover and enjoy, whatever time of year you visit.
