Living
Lunegarth Cottage is one of those rare places that manages to feel both peaceful and full of life. Sleeping up to 12 guests in five stylish bedrooms, this luxury holiday house occupies its own private island on the Hermitage Estate near Lancaster, surrounded by the gently flowing River Lune and leafy views that change with the seasons. Mornings often begin with little more than the gentle sound of the birds and the movement of the water, while evenings can take whatever shape your group chooses. The interiors have a fresh, contemporary feel, with soft neutral tones lifted by warm greens and rustic browns that mirror the natural surroundings outside. Upstairs, the bespoke kitchen, complete with its beautiful timber dining table, is somewhere everyone naturally gathers over breakfast before the day begins. Just along the hall, the spacious sitting room stretches beneath the roofline, with deep sofas, comfortable armchairs and a log burner making a welcoming place to unwind. Then, tucked away in the sunken gardens, there's an entirely different side to the house. An impressive entertainment space combines a casino-inspired games room, bar, retro arcade consoles, karaoke, air hockey, table football, pool table and even a dance floor, making Lunegarth every bit as memorable for celebrations as it is for quiet riverside escapes. There isn't another holiday home quite like it.
The property sits just outside the village of Halton, only a few miles from Lancaster, so you're never far from good food, independent shops and places to explore. Lancaster's historic lanes are lined with cafés, traditional pubs and restaurants, while the city's imposing castle, maritime museum and Williamson Park are all worth a visit. Closer to home, Crook o' Lune has long been one of Lancashire's favourite beauty spots, where tranquil riverside walks, cycling routes and picnic areas make the most of the surrounding countryside. On warmer days, it's easy to lose track of time beside the water before returning to Lunegarth for lunch in the garden or an afternoon soaking in the hot tub. If you'd rather stay active, horse riding, climbing and fishing are all available nearby, with guests enjoying fishing rights along this stretch of the River Lune.
Head beyond Lancaster, and the landscape opens out in every direction. The Forest of Bowland National Landscape is only a short drive away, with quiet country roads winding through traditional villages, open moorland and wooded valleys. An hour brings you to the Yorkshire Dales, where limestone scenery, market towns and walking trails make for rewarding day trips, while Morecambe Bay offers coastal walks and spectacular sunsets over the estuary. Yet however much you see during the day, Lunegarth has a habit of drawing everyone back together. Barbecues drift into evenings around the pizza oven, conversations continue out under the stars from the warmth of the hot tub, and before long, someone is suggesting just one more game downstairs. It's a house that gives groups space to celebrate together without ever losing the sense of being surrounded by nature.
