About Howgill Cottage

Howgill Cottage is in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), close to pretty villages and vibrant market towns, with incredible views of the Durham Dales. There are beautiful walks from the doorstep of this welcoming studio apartment, which sleeps two people and is dog-friendly. The location is fantastic for exploring this natural landscape, being peaceful without being isolated. Howgill is one of three lovely cottages on the farm. Depending on availability, these can be booked together for extended families or friends.

West Hury Farm is in Baldersdale, loved by locals and visitors for its beautiful scenery. Walkers have access to miles of footpaths, including the long-distance Pennine Way and the Teesdale Way. The owners have left maps and other information about the local area in the cottage to make it easy for visitors to plan their next day's adventure. Hury Reservoir is only half a mile from the cottage and easily reached on foot or bicycle. A favourite local walk goes around Hury and the adjacent Blackton Reservoir, following a mainly level path around the water. Despite its popularity as a local beauty spot, you'll be unlikely to pass more than the odd friendly fisherman or dog-walker along the peaceful and picturesque route. The Grassholme Reservoir, around six miles away, is another superb choice for a walk, picnic, and a spot of fishing.

Other local walks include Hannah's Meadow, about a mile from the cottage and a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Hamsterley Forest has footpaths, bridleways and cycling trails, while the High Force, Low Force, and Summerhill Force waterfall walks are also within easy reach. West Hury Farm is only an hour from Ullswater and the Lake District National Park and even closer to the Yorkshire Dales National Park. It's unlikely you'll run out of places to explore!

Ways to have fun during your stay at Howgill include wild swimming in the River Tees and birdwatching in Baldersdale. Barnard Castle - the market town and its medieval namesake - is ten miles from the cottage and a good place for shopping, lunch, and sightseeing. You can also visit the Bowes Museum, Eggleston Hall Gardens and Raby Castle. Further afield, attractions include Hadrian's Wall, the Beamish Living Museum, and the cities of Durham and York.

Howgill Cottage is available for holidays all year round.
