Riverdale Cottage is in the heart of Barnard Castle, providing 4-Star accommodation for couples and solo travellers (plus one child under 12 years old). The self-catering holiday cottage is Grade-II listed and dates from 1860 with beautiful original features and all the expected modern comforts that make it feel like a welcoming home-away-from-home. It is in a unique quiet location just two minutes walk from the town centre with secure on-site car parking which is at boon, especially on Market Day [Wednesday] and the fantastic Farmers Market on the first Saturday of each month. Despite being a three-minute walk from the Coach and Horses pub, Mad Hatter's Tea Room and a wealth of other independent shops and businesses, it is tranquil thanks to its position on a leafy lane close to the River Tees.
Barnard Castle has everything you could hope for in a historic market town, including a busy marketplace and medieval castle ruins. A stroll around town is a lovely way to spend an hour or two. Fuel yourself with a pot of tea and homemade cake from a local cafe before taking a walk around the medieval walls and treating yourself to a bit of shopping. Visitors who are there on the first Saturday of the month will be lucky enough to catch the monthly farmers' market on the Cobbles. There is a family-run greengrocer, a Morrisons and two small supermarkets, and a good choice of restaurants and take-aways for times you do not want to cook.
Things to do on your holiday in Barnard Castle include visiting the spectacular Bowes Museum, where the building is as impressive as the collections it holds. High and Low Force are popular walking destinations, as are the trails around Flatts Wood and Hamsterley Forest. The North Pennines, Yorkshire Dales and Lake District are also within reach. Raby Castle, Auckland Castle, and Egglestone Abbey are lovely in all seasons. You're close enough to York and Durham for exciting days of shopping and sightseeing.
Guests who have stayed at Riverdale Cottage love the relaxed atmosphere and fantastic location for a walking, cycling or sightseeing holiday in Teesdale and the wider area.
