Mayland Cottage is a welcoming family holiday home in a beautiful location on a family-run farm near Bishop Auckland, a mile from Woodland village. The cottage has lots of space inside and out, sleeping up to five people in three bedrooms. It's both child and dog friendly, and a favourite with couples and families. The owners have created a home-away-from-home atmosphere, and many happy guests return year after year for a relaxing holiday in the countryside, close to the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
The wealth of beautiful footpaths is one of the highlights of a holiday at Mayland Cottage. Hamsterley Forest is on the doorstep, offering 2000 hectares of paradise, especially for birds including buzzards, hawks and owls who are just three of dozens of species that thrive in the peaceful environment. In addition to walking, guests can explore on horseback with miles with two pony trekking centres within three miles of the farm. Keen mountain bikers love that there are world-class trails close by, including those at Descend and Hamsterley Bike Park less than a mile from the cottage.
You don't have to be an energetic outdoor-enthusiast to have a fantastic holiday at Mayland Cottage. Within a small radius are historic market towns like Barnard Castle and Bishop Auckland, while the city of Durham is just over half an hour's drive away with its magnificent cathedral, castle and university. England's tallest unbroken waterfall, High Force, is within easy reach, and there are countless beautiful views in the nearby Tees and Wear Valleys. Local attractions include the Beamish Open Air Museum, Raby Castle, the Bowes Museum, and the Binchester Roman Fort. Even just sitting in the cottage garden is a pleasure - an RSPB survey identified 51 different species of birds on the farm.
The North Pennines are gorgeous in every season, which means that it's always a good time to visit. Staying at Mayland Cottage puts you close to some of the region's most beautiful sights and favourite attractions.
