About Owl Cottage

Owl Cottage is a stylish escape in the beautiful Durham Dales. The romantic holiday cottage is overflowing with charm, boasting a luxuriously large log burner and the perfect blend of vintage and contemporary furnishings that make it a welcoming escape for couples in every season. The Middleton-in-Teesdale location is excellent for walkers, especially those who don't like being too far from The Forrester's pub for a post-hike pint. With bookings available all year round and short breaks possible outside of peak season, it's no wonder this cottage is so popular with couples and the occasional solo-traveller who yearns for something far more welcoming than an impersonal hotel room.

Middleton-in-Teesdale is right on the border of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and within easy reach of the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District. It's next to Hudeshope Beck and only a few miles from the breathtaking drop of High Force waterfalls. Middleton-in-Teesdale is a friendly market town with cafes, pubs, independent shops and a small supermarket all within walking distance. The Durham Dales have a walk to suit every ability. Alfred Wainwright loved the stretch from Middleton-on-Teesdale to High Cup Nick via the River Tees and described it as "a walk of near perfection". The Pennine Way and Teesdale Way pass through the village, and there are also routes leading to Low Force and Holwick. Cyclists and mountain bikers also have access to notable routes with fantastic views. Bike hire is available locally.

Local attractions include Raby Castle, Bowes Museum and Barnard Castle which are all a 15 minute drive from Owl Cottage. Barnard Castle is great for shops, antiques, artisan bakers, and of course English Heritage site Barnard Castle. The ancient city of Durham with its magnificent Cathedral and the famous University is around 40 minutes away, with lots of places to eat, drink and shop. The sightseeing doesn't stop when the sun goes down because the Durham Dales has multiple Dark Sky Discovery Sites, including Cow Green Reservoir, Grassholme Reservoir (and it's Observatory), and Balderhead Reservoir. Owl Cottage provides guests with binoculars, head torches and stargazing maps, as well as comfortable chairs and blankets so you can snuggle up and marvel at the magnificence of the Milky Way undimmed by light pollution and, if you're lucky, the glowing beauty of the Northern Lights.

Accommodation Comprises:

Don't blame us if you can't tear yourself away from Owl Cottage when it's time to leave. This gorgeous holiday home has it all, from period features to high-quality bed linen.

Downstairs:

  • Picture yourself snuggled up on the sofa, glass in hand, a warming fire crackling in the log burner and something captivating on Netflix.
  • Cooking on holiday is always more fun than cooking at home, especially when you've got this lovely country-style kitchen to use. The wide solid-wood bench doubles up as a breakfast bar/dining table and, because of the open-plan layout, you can still chat to whoever gets to put their feet up on the sofa.

Upstairs:

  • Let the gentle hoots of the resident owl soothe you to sleep in the super-kingsize bed, where you can stretch out in six feet of luxurious mattress and bedding. A thick padded headboard provides stylish support as you sit in bed, sipping your tea and taking inspiration for the day from the fantastic views.
  • A long soak in the bath is something many people don't have time for in a normal working week so make the most of the time and the tub while you're here. There's a shower over the bath for getting ready in the morning, as well as a WC and a handbasin.

Outside: A traditional wooden outdoor bench is great for enjoying a lazy morning cuppa in the sunshine or tipping your head back to admire the brilliant night skies. The cottage has road side parking.

Additional Information: Utilities, WiFi, bed linen and bath towels are included, as is fuel for the log burner. One well-behaved dog is welcome. Guests to supply dog beds. Smoking indoors is NOT permitted.
