Sailmakers Cottage, Polruan — a Cornish hideaway with estuary views
Perched in the ancient fishing village of Polruan, Sailmakers Cottage is a traditional stone cottage with character in every corner and one of the finest water views you'll find in Cornwall. From the first-floor lounge, the Fowey estuary stretches out before you — boats moving across the water, the pretty harbour town of Fowey sitting opposite, and beyond it all, the Atlantic.
The village itself is the kind of place people stumble upon and spend years trying to return to. Narrow streets wind between whitewashed cottages, flights of stone steps drop down to the harbour, and the pace of life slows considerably the moment you step off the ferry.
Sailmakers sleeps four across two bedrooms — a king-size double and a bunk room that works well for children or a pair of friends happy to share. A shower room with WC sits on the ground floor alongside the kitchen, while the lounge above opens up to those estuary views that will have you lingering long over your morning coffee.
Outside, there are two outdoor spaces: a small patio at the front with seating and a rear patio garden — ideal for a quiet evening glass of something cold after a day on the coastal path.

Getting out and about
The beach is a five-minute walk away. So is the village shop, the bakery and two harbour pubs, both of which serve food throughout the day. The passenger ferry to Fowey runs a regular service until 11pm in summer (7pm in winter), crossing in minutes and dropping you into a town full of independent shops, restaurants and a proper working harbour worth an afternoon of anyone's time.
For walkers, the South West Coast Path passes virtually outside the door. The Hall Walk is a particular highlight — it begins at Polruan Harbour and follows the estuary all the way to Fowey, with views that stop you in your tracks at every turn. Those with more energy can push further along the coast to Polperro, passing secluded coves and remote stretches of cliff that see far fewer visitors than the main beaches. Atlantic Bay and Readymoney Beach are both within reach and both have parking if you prefer to drive.
Practical things worth knowing
Polruan has a public car park at the top of the village — Saviours Car Park — and limited spaces on the quay, both subject to charges. A luggage drop is available just outside the cottage, which makes arrival considerably easier given the village's characteristically steep streets. The whole property is yours for the duration of your stay.
Sailmakers Cottage suits couples wanting somewhere quiet and genuinely characterful, and families looking for a base with beaches, sea air and enough to fill a fortnight without ever feeling stretched. It is one of those rare places that is exactly what it appears to be.
