About Higher Scarsick Cottage

Higher Scarsick Cottage is a rural retreat in a quiet corner of Cornwall. Set on a working farm and surrounded by stunning countryside, there is easily enough space to sleep six people in three bedrooms and it is a favourite with families of all ages. Cornwall feels wonderfully rural and spread out but, the truth is that nothing is very far from anywhere. When you stay at High Scarsick Cottage, you can create your perfect family holiday in Cornwall.

The same family has owned higher Scarsick Farm for almost a century. It has a wonderfully timeless feel, particularly during lambing season in the spring when you wake in the morning to see the newest additions to the flock tentatively finding their legs while never letting mum out of their sight! The cottage is on the outskirts of Treneglos village at a midpoint between Launceston, Bude and Camelford. You could not ask for a better location to access all of the best sights and attractions in North Cornwall. The village has a lovely 12th Century church, and there are some beautiful walks nearby including a circular route that takes in the Saxon village of Warbstow.

The nearest town to Higher Scarsick Cottage is Launceston, around 10 miles away on the banks of the Tamar River. Launceston is a vibrant market town with an excellent variety of places to eat, drink and shop, many of which are independently owned rather than generic high-street names. The town was once the county capital, and the remains of the Saxon castle is a testament to its importance. In addition to walking, cycling and fishing, Launceston attractions include the Launceston Steam Railway, Dingles Fairground Heritage Centre, the Launceston House Museum and the Tamar Otter Park.

Bodmin Moor is around ten miles from the cottage, offering miles of an unspoiled landscape for walking, mountain biking and climbing. Dartmoor is also within easy reach so, even if you are the sort of person who cannot sit still for longer than ten minutes, you will find an activity to keep you happily active and occupied.

Fringing all of this beautiful countryside and wild moorland is the glorious coastline of North Cornwall. This region is steeped in myth and legend from mystical King Arthur to the somewhat embellished but true tales of pirates. Learn to surf at Bude, or paddle in the Atlantic and build sandcastles at Widemouth Bay. Climb the steep flight of steps at Tintagel and discover the magic of Merlin’s Cave, or admire the staggering beauty of Boscastle as you eat ice cream and swing your legs over the harbour wall.

North Cornwall, and particularly the area around High Scarsick Cottage has so much to offer as a holiday destination, whatever time of year you visit. The cottage is only two hours from Bristol and an hour from Exeter, and just a short drive from the coast and friendly country towns.

Location (Cornwall)

Accommodation Comprises:

The cottage has a traditional layout with features like oak beams. The owners have gently refurbished the property so it retains its original lines and character while still being very comfortable for modern guests.

Downstairs:

  • The sitting room is a relaxing space with modern sofas positioned around a deep inglenook fireplace where there is a 'flame-effect' stove. There is a television with DVD player, a selection of board games, and the cottage has WiFi.
  • Kitchen/diner which is another welcoming room that is perfect for easy family dining. The kitchen has an electric oven and hob, dishwasher, fridge/freezer and microwave. The table seats six people with a highchair available on request, and the kitchen and dining room are stocked with all necessary utensils, cutlery and crockery.
  • Separate utility room with a washing machine and sink. It is handy for leaving wet shoes and coats, as well as for drying muddy paws!

Upstairs:

  • Master bedroom suite which is elegantly decorated so that guests feel pampered and special. A super king-sized (6ft) bed is the focal point, while bedside tables, reading lights and storage make the space practical as well as comfortable.
  • There is a second bedroom with double bed plus ensuite shower room with WC and wash basin. It has lovely views over the surrounding countryside and gets lots of natural light.
  • The third bedroom is a twin with two 3ft single beds. Its neutral decor makes it suitable for either child or adult guests. There is space here for a cot, which can be provided on request.
  • A modern family bathroom has a walk-in shower, separate bath, WC and hand basin, as well as a heated towel rail.

Outside: The cottage has a large, well-maintained garden enclosed with a stone wall. Garden furniture is ideal for relaxed meals and offers somewhere comfortable to sit and listen to the birds as you admire the view. There is also a stand that disposable BBQ's can be used on for guest use. The cottage has off-street parking for several cars.

Additional Information: All linen, towels (not beach towels) and utilities are included. One well behaved dog welcome with prior agreement from the owner (please enquire if you would like to bring more dogs). A highchair and cot can be provided, although guests will need to bring cot linen. Short breaks are possible depending on availability (two night minimum) during off peak times or at short notice during peak season. Smoking is not permitted. Saturday is the normal changeover but the owner will try to be flexible where possible.
