About Dale Cottage

Askrigg is centrally situated deep in the heart of Upper Wensleydale in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. It is easily accessible by car, and there is a public bus and 'The Little White Bus' service, a volunteer run service that runs throughout the Dale.

Askrigg, or 'Darroby' of the original well loved TV series 'All Creatures Great and Small' is a lovely old village of stone cottages and houses. The Vet's surgery 'Skeldale House' home of the fictional Dales vet James Herriot is easily recognised, also 'The Drover's Inn' which is the Kings Arms pub. The original village cross, erected in 1830, pump and bull ring dating from the 18th century are still in the village market place.

The village boasts three pubs, The Crown Inn, The Middle House which is also a hotel and The Kings Arms, all of which serve great food and drink.  A well stocked village store and a great Deli. The Dales Fish and Chip van calls on a Wednesday tea time and a fresh fish van visits on a Friday morning.

Richmond, with its cobbled market square, traditional shops, cafes and pubs is 18 miles away, and Richmond Castle, with its rich history and is the best preserved Norman castle in England, dating from around 1070 is a must for visitors coming to this area.

The Market towns of Leyburn, a cobbled market place, many shops, pubs and a supermarket is 12 miles to the west, and Hawes with its many shops, cafes, pubs and famous Cheese Making Centre is 5 miles east. Market days are Fridays and Tuesdays respectively.

There are many footpaths around the village, the Climb to Mill Gill waterfall is a favourite and those wanting more of a challenge could walk further along the valley to Hawes, or eastward towards Carperby, Castle Bolton and Redmire.

Climbing out of the village onto the heather moors you will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside.

A number of waterfall walks are close by with Aysgarth falls, upper and lower, West Burton force and Cotterdale Fall all being easily accessible.

Exploring further afield there are great days out in the City of York, Northallerton town, Kendal, Settle and Richmond with their market days and White Scar caves at Ingleton are just a few suggestions.
