Gardener's Cottage is a comfortable holiday home in a wonderful location in the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The three-bedroom property sleeps up to six people and is perfect for families who can't wait to get to the beach, as it is only a short walk over the road and dunes between the cottage and the water. Northumberland's coastline is staggeringly gorgeous, and nowhere more so than the stretch between Seahouses and Beadnell, where Gardener's Cottage is located.
For all their beauty, Northumberland's beaches are incredibly devoid of day-trippers and sunbathers, even in summer. There is loads of space for fun games of beach football or cricket, and enough sand to make a castle to rival nearby Bamburgh! Local stables can arrange a horse ride along the sand, or take a blanket and a thermos and settle back under one of Europe's biggest International Dark Sky Parks for a dazzling display of stars.
Being half a mile from both Seahouses and Beadnell means there is always something fun to do, interesting to see or delicious to eat. Seahouses has supermarkets, shops and a harbour busy with fishing and sightseeing boats. Beadnell is quieter, with a small marina that has the unusual honour of being the only west-facing harbour on the east coast. Both have shallow water that is good for swimming and surfing, while the shape of the beach means that Beadnell is also popular with wakeboarders and kiteboarders.
One of the reasons that the scenery around Gardener's Cottage is so beautiful is because much of it is protected either as part of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, as a national park, or as a nature reserve. The dunes across the road from the cottage are part of the Annstead Dunes Nature Reserve, and if you go to the Farne Islands (and you should certainly go if you love seals, puffins, and panoramic views), then you'll see how well the National Trust cares for the setting.
Day trips can include a drive, cycle or walk north to Bamburgh, well known for its castle but also a good place for lunch. The Holy Island of Lindisfarne is beautiful not only for its ruined castle and monastery but for the wealth of flora and fauna that thrive there. Spend a happy day touring Alnwick Castle and Gardens, parts of which were used as Hogwarts when filming the Harry Potter movies, play golf at one of the half-a-dozen courses within easy reach, or arrange a horse ride on the sand through local stables.
Gardener's Cottage is one of a collection of cottages on the 600-acre Annstead Farm, lovingly restored and given a new lease of life by the owners. It can be booked on its own or together with one of the farm's other cottages to accommodate extended families or friends. Please see the owner's website for more information.
