Old Bald Peg is a charming Victorian terraced cottage in the quiet village of Wass, situated in the south west corner of the North York Moors National Park, close to the ruins of Byland Abbey. In an area steeped in racing history, the cottage takes its name from one of the foundation mares of the Thoroughbred breed, foaled at Helmsley in the first half of the 17th Century. A peaceful and relaxing dog friendly retreat, recently refurbished to provide luxury modern comfort, yet retaining all its original charm. The cottage sleeps up to four guests in two bedrooms. Surrounded by dales, forests and moorland, the North York Moors offers something for everyone, all year round, with miles of footpaths and scenic cycling routes straight from the door. Perfect for walkers, cyclists, romantic getaways and foodies wanting a relaxing break.
The popular Stapylton Arms and the Abbey Inn at Byland,(owned by Tommy Banks), are both within easy walking distance, both serving delicious food. For Michelin starred excellence, the world renowned Black Swan at Oldstead is under two miles and the famous Star Inn at Harome just 15 minutes away. The nearest shop is in the village of Ampleforth, just along the road, which also has a dog friendly cafe and two more excellent pubs. The vibrant market town of Helmsley is a ten minute drive to the North, with a medieval castle and walled garden, Arts Centre, the Duncombe Park Estate with beautiful grounds and the National Birds of Prey centre, and a variety of delightful independent shops, tearooms and restaurants. It is also the starting point of the Cleveland Way walking trail. The first leg to Rievaulx Abbey, makes a lovely walk where you can stop off for a visit and picnic in the grounds. Nearby Sutton Bank and the Kilburn White Horse offer spectacular views and a range of walks and cycle trails for all abilities. Bike hire is available from the Visitor Centre if needed, as well as pony trekking at nearby Boltby and golf and sports centre at Ampleforth.
The North Yorkshire Heritage Coast is an hour away and well worth exploring. Drive or cycle across the wild and beautiful moors or take the leisurely North Yorkshire Steam Railway to Whitby, stopping off at Goathland station, made famous by Harry Potter and Heartbeat. Enjoy long coastal walks, lovely beaches and the pretty villages of Staithes, Runswick Bay and Robin Hood’s Bay, not to mention, the best fish and chips ever.
Wass is also close to the Howardian Hills AONB, with the majestic Castle Howard just 25 minutes from the cottage for a great day out and the market town of Malton, the food capital of the county, with its monthly artisan food market and Annual Food Festival. The historic city of York is only half an hour away with a vast array of sightseeing, shopping and dining opportunities. To the west, the Yorkshire Dales are less than an hour away as well as Harrogate and Ripon.
At the end of the day, whatever adventures you’ve had, Old Bald Peg offers warm Yorkshire hospitality and a cosy base to return to. Ideally suited to adults, we also welcome families with children over 12 years of age and up to two well behaved dogs by prior arrangement.
