The family of Fernleigh's owners have holidayed in Robin Hood's Bay for more than a century, across five generations. Bringing this grand three storey villa back to life as a holiday home has been a very personal project, shaped by family memories, the history of the village and a love of the Yorkshire coast.
Fernleigh has been carefully prepared for guests, keeping its Victorian character while adding the comforts expected from a modern family home. Period colours, original features, local artwork, vintage railway posters and carefully chosen furnishings all help create a strong sense of place.
The focus throughout the house is on comfort, character and Yorkshire hospitality. Many of the furnishings and finishing touches have been sourced from Yorkshire makers, including soft furnishings from the Yorkshire Blanket Company and carefully selected pieces from local craftspeople.
As Yorkshire Life captured in its feature on Fernleigh, this is a house designed to feel warm and welcoming from the moment guests arrive. It is a place for family meals, muddy boots after coastal walks, children heading up to the pirate bunk room, grandparents enjoying the sea views and everyone coming back together at the end of the day.
Fernleigh sleeps up to 10 adults plus 2 children. The six sleeping spaces include three en suite double bedrooms, one en suite twin room, one further double bedroom and a private family suite with a king size bedroom, a separate pirate and smuggler themed children's bunk room and a private shower room. Outside, the private enclosed dog friendly garden, outdoor dining space, BBQ and six person hot tub add another way to enjoy the house at a slower pace. Parking is available for two cars, with one space on the drive and one street parking space directly across the drive.
Ground Floor Charm
Through the elegant front porch, step into a high ceilinged hallway painted in rich period colours, complete with coat pegs, shoe storage and loan umbrellas. On the walls, vintage railway posters and local artwork tell part of the story of Robin Hood's Bay and the era in which Fernleigh was built.
The living room is designed for gathering. There are comfortable sofas, cosy bay window chairs, a 55 inch Smart TV, Nintendo Switch 2 and a feature open fireplace. It is a room for board games, books from the shelves, films after a day outside or simply warming up after a walk along the coast.
The dining room is made for celebrations and time together, with a large bespoke table, a log burner and a colour palette that feels both intimate and grand. It is the kind of room that invites long breakfasts, Sunday lunches and evening meals that stretch on a little longer than planned, with the warmth of the fire crackling away in winter.
Beyond the entrance hall, the snug doubles as a quiet office space, complete with an iMac for those who need to get some work done from the Bay. Double doors open from here onto the private enclosed garden, with outdoor seating, a modern BBQ and space to enjoy warmer days outside.
The six person hot tub sits tucked away at the end of the garden, giving guests a peaceful place to relax after a day walking the coast path, exploring Whitby or searching for fossils on the beach. It is made for easing into the evening, settling back after supper and enjoying a slower pace under the Robin Hood's Bay sky.
The kitchen is generous and sociable, centred around a modern range cooker with a breakfast bar and stools. Modern Miele appliances, quality cookware, a Sage Nespresso coffee machine and a cafetiere make it easy to prepare everything from family breakfasts to relaxed suppers. If you prefer, pop some of the Baytown Coffee from your welcome hamper into the cafetiere, sit back and enjoy.
Bedrooms and suites
On the first floor, two front bedrooms, a Kingsize and a twin, enjoy views over the Bay. A second Kingsize sits quietly at the rear, with its own access staircase from the snug/office below. Each first floor bedroom has its own private/ensuite shower room.
On the second floor, the private family suite sits behind its own suite door. Inside the suite there is a super-king size bedroom, a separate pirate themed children's bunk room with full size bunk beds and a private shower room shared by the suite.
A further double bedroom sits at the rear of the second floor, again with private shower room facilities.
Children's books, a video baby monitor, a changing mat, stair gates, a high chair, children's cutlery and a large travel cot are provided to make travelling with little ones that bit easier.
Comfort throughout
Fernleigh has been fully renovated with a full pressure hot water system for powerful showers, full gas central heating, high speed Wi-Fi throughout and a private EV charger outside, available free of charge.
There are five private shower rooms and a separate downstairs WC. Fernleigh does not have a bath, but the house is designed around generous, private shower facilities for each bedroom or suite.
Bed linen, towels, starter fuel for the fires, baby equipment and use of the hot tub are included. Each adult bedroom has a hairdryer, and the house is set up with the practical details that make a large family stay feel easy.
Parking is available for two cars, with one space on the drive and one street parking space directly across the drive. There is also free parking on the roads around the house (Mount Pleasant North and South) as well as two car parks in the village and parking permits for sale for spaces at the village Post Office.
The private enclosed garden is dog friendly and includes outdoor dining, comfortable seating, BBQ facilities and the six person hot tub. Fernleigh sits in a beautifully calm residential part of the village, so guests are given simple guidance on quiet hours and thoughtful garden use, helping everyone enjoy the space in a relaxed and considerate way.
