Cowslip Cottage is a charming self-catering cottage in Levisham, one of the prettiest villages in the North York Moors National Park. Just a two-minute walk from the Horseshoe Inn, a favourite pub for locals and visitors, it sleeps three people in two bedrooms and is popular with couples and small families.
Levisham is the ideal base for exploring as there are many lovely walks, bridleways and cycle routes from the cottage front door. The Hole of Horcrum is less than a mile’s walk from the village and is an absolute must-see if you get the opportunity. At 400 feet deep and half a mile wide, it is arguably the most impressive natural feature in the area, which is certainly an achievement given the dramatic landscape of the North York Moors National Park. The ditches and hills which dot Levisham Moor are evidence of Bronze Age settlements, while the trek to the romantic ruins of Skelton Tower will reward your efforts with incredible views.
The market town of Pickering is six miles from Cowslip Cottage. It has a thriving community with good amenities, independent shops and cafes, pubs, bars and restaurants. Visit Pickering Castle or the Beck Isle Museum with an excellent range of displays and exhibits. Put your feet up and take a ride on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway with steam trains that journey through the spectacular countryside made famous worldwide by the television show “Heartbeat”. You can even take a day to wander through magnificent Castle Howard estate which has been used as a backdrop for “Brideshead Revisited”, “Victoria” and “Death Comes to Pemberley”; or spend the day by the sea at Whitby (sixteen miles away) and explore the coast peppered with pretty fishing villages like Robin Hood's Bay.
Dalby Forest is only three miles from Cowslip Cottage, offering a variety of cycling trails for all abilities, and an exciting 17-mile off-road route that starts by the Hole of Horcrum carpark and goes through Cropton Forest. Swap your saddle for the equine variety and explore on horseback, or tour the national park on sweeping roads with staggering views and pretty villages - whatever you decide you will make holiday memories to cherish forever.
