About Stonecrop Cottage

Stonecrop Cottage is a self-catering apartment in a converted granary in the Northumberland National Park. The one-bedroom rental is ideal for couples or individuals who yearn for fantastic views and gorgeous walks from the doorstep. Stonecrop is in the quiet village of Alwinton, a short walk from the Rose and Thistle pub and within easy reach of the River Alwin, after which the village is named. Alwinton is a Dark Sky Discovery Site which means that the sensational views don't stop when the sun goes down.

There's no "best" time to visit Alwinton - it is stunning in any season. The views here are no less spectacular than those in the better known walking regions of England, but they have the benefit of being lesser-known, meaning fewer people on the trails and more space for you. Alwinton is north of the Upper Coquetdale valley and surrounded by undulating hills and footpaths once used whisky smugglers. The five-mile Alwinton and River Alwin loop is an excellent way to stretch your legs, incorporating part of the Clennell Street route followed by drovers for centuries. There is also a scenic footpath to Harbottle Castle and the Drake Stone, with other local footpaths going go Barrowburn, The Dodd and Wether Cairn, and Linhope Spout. The Cheviots are around 20 miles north, with more variety. Horse riding and fishing are also popular.

The market town of Rothbury is 10 miles south-east of the cottage. It has a wide choice of places to eat, drink and shop, a full calendar of events, and is home to the fascinating Cragside House where Lord Armstrong pioneered hydroelectricity and created stunning gardens with five lakes and more than seven million plants. Stonecrop Cottage is only a short drive from Hadrian's Wall and the Scottish Border, ensuring there is always something wonderful to discover, no matter what time of the year you stay.
