About The Old Workshop

The Old Workshop is a character self-catering holiday cottage in the Northumberland village of Milfield, within walking distance of a village shop, cafe, and the 18th Century Red Lion pub. It's a walker's paradise, with scenic footpaths in all directions. Once a popular stop-off point for travellers between Edinburgh and London, it's a relaxed community on the edge of the Northumberland National Park, within reach of the spectacular beaches of the Northumberland Coast and walking distance of the Cheviot Hills. The beautifully presented cottage sleeps five people in three bedrooms and is ideal for families who want to explore northeast England and the Scottish borders.

You have an enormous choice of things to do and places to see during your stay at The Old Workshop. Many guests visit for the wealth of footpaths like the six-mile loop from the village and around the base of the Cheviot Hills to Crookhouses. Other local walking destinations include Yeavering Bell, Hethpool Wild Goat, Great Hetha, Doddington Moor, and the College Valley. The Pennine Way and St Cuthbert's Way give more variety. Mountain bikers also love this landscape for its challenging climbs, sweeping downhills and stunning views. Road cycling is popular for the same reason, with local stables allowing guests to swap their saddles and explore by horseback. Anglers can fish in the River Tweed and the River Till or drive to the coast for some beach fishing. There are seven golf courses within half an hour's drive - one for every day of your stay if you're a keen golfer.

Shop in delightful market towns like Wooler and Berwick-upon-Tweed. If you yearn for a more cosmopolitan atmosphere, Edinburgh is only 90 minutes drive from the cottage or a little longer by train from Berwick. In addition to Edinburgh Castle and other sights, historic attractions include Chain Bridge, Flodden Battlefield, Maelmin Trail, and the Ford and Etal Estates. During your stay, other places to visit include Holy Island of Lindisfarne, the Farne Islands, Bamburgh, Seahouses, Alnwick, Dunstaburgh and Chillingham.

The Old Workshop is a wonderful place to stay at any time of the year. The owners offer short breaks outside of peak season, depending on availability.

Accommodation Comprises:

The Old Workshop is a period building that is lovingly restored into a welcoming holiday cottage. Accommodation is entirely on the ground floor level.

  • You'll love relaxing in the spacious living/dining room. There are two long sofas, a log burner, big Smart TV, and a skylight that increases the natural light and sense of space. The solid wood dining table seats six people and matches a country pine dresser. After dinner, clear off the table and set up a board game for screen-free family games nights.
  • Contrasting with the property's age, the kitchen is a fantastically modern space with efficient appliances, long worktops for preparing food, and a dishwasher for quick clearing up after meals. Cupboards and drawers are stocked with crockery, cutlery, glasses.
  • Master bedroom has an en suite shower room and a kingsize bed and bedside tables with reading lights. The windows overlook the garden.
  • Twin bedroom with two full-sized single beds, bedside tables with reading lights, and a tall chest of drawers. This can be configured as a super king layout if required.
  • Quiet single bedroom with a big window looking out over the garden. There's also a bedside table with a light, and a wardrobe.
  • Large family bathroom with a bath, walk-in shower, heated towel rail, a shaving point, and a WC.

Outside: The cottage's private garden is accessed via the dining room. It has a barbecue, outdoor seating, and flourishing herb beds. There is also off-street parking.

Additional Information: Utilities, WiFi, bed linen and bath towels are included. Short breaks are possible outside of peak season, depending on availability.
