About Heavenfield Cottage

Heavenfield Cottage is, quite simply, divine. The sympathetically converted cottage sits on St Oswald’s Farm near the village of Wall close to the border of the Northumberland National Park, amongst some of the most beautiful countryside in the North, if not the whole of England. The exceptionally high standard of accommodation has earned a coveted 5-Star rating and ROSE Award from Visit England, making it the perfect self-catering choice for couples seeking somewhere extra special for a romantic holiday.

You cannot escape the legacy of the Romans, and Hadrian in particular, in Northumberland. The farm is actually built on top of the famed Hadrian’s Wall, with some of the wall’s stones used within the construction of the cottage. The old battle site of Heavenfield is nearby and is only a short walk from the cottage. St Oswald’s Church itself stands within the field, and although mainly Victorian, has a Roman stone altar. Heavenfield and the church are at the end of the long-distance St Oswald’s Way footpath and boast what can only be described as breathtaking views.

Hexham is a lively market town five miles from Heavenfield Cottage, with an excellent array of places to eat, drink and shop. The town also has its own cinema, theatre, a medieval prison, and undoubtedly the jewel in its crown, the spectacular Hexham Abbey.

You will be spoilt for choice with fascinating museums such as Vindolanda, the Roman Army Museum and Housesteads, which will give you an understanding of the history of the area and an appreciation for why it is so unique. Alternatively, spend a few happy hours browsing nearby villages like Allendale, Corbridge and Blanchard, each of which is within 30 minutes by car.

The best way to appreciate the breathtaking beauty of the landscape is from within it, with walking and cycling two of the most popular ways to do so. In addition to the lovely countryside around Wall, you can drive to Kielder Water & Forest Park where there are miles of footpaths, watersports on the reservoir, and challenging cross-country and downhill mountain bike trails. Thanks to the lack of light pollution, Kielder has Gold Tier Dark Sky Park status, and the Northumberland International Dark Sky Park is the fourth largest dark sky park in the world. The North Pennines is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, as well as a UNESCO Global Geopark, and is only around ten miles from the cottage.

In addition to these incredible swathes of countryside, Northumberland boasts magnificent castles and country houses that include Alnwick Castle, Bamburgh Castle, Cragside and Wallington Hall. Northumberland is also within easy reach of Newcastle and Gateshead offering visitors a great shopping experience and nightlife.

However you choose to spend your time, Heavenfield Cottage is a stylish place to stay, providing guests with space, privacy, and a luxurious standard of accommodation.

For the three year's running, this owner has very proudly been awarded 'Self Catering Provider of the Year' in the North East of England Tourism Awards

Accommodation Comprises:

The exterior of Heavenfield Cottage may be rustic stone but the interior is a haven of soft shades, luxurious fabrics and top quality fixtures and fittings that have earned the cottage its 5-star status.

  • Open-plan living/dining and kitchen area which feels both airy and cosy at the same time thanks to natural textures like the oak beams, wooden flooring and the exposed stone of the feature wall. A deep sofa and matching snuggle chair face the log burner, with a good supply of logs available in the woodstore outside. The room also has a 40-inch Smart TV with DVD player, and the cottage has WiFi.
  • Dining area with a table and chairs for two, position to benefit from the warmth of the log burner, which is more for atmosphere than necessity as the cottage has efficient underfloor heating.
  • The kitchen's sleek, modern appliances fit beautifully under glossy black quartz worktops, making catering easy even for the most haphazard cook.
  • There are three steps from the kitchen to the hallway, off which leads to the bedroom and bathroom.
  • Spacious bedroom which is dominated by a heavenly super-king sized bed made with luxurious bedding and Egyptian cotton sheets with a high thread count. The sense of calm is gently amplified thanks to soft shades of grey and blue in the form of cushions and throws. In addition to ample storage, the bedroom has an armchair and a Smart TV. The room can also be configured with two 3-foot wide single beds if preferred.
  • Enormous bathroom next door, offering not only a large walk-in rainforest shower, but also a doubled ended bath. Thick towelling bathrobes are provided for guests to use during their stay, adding to the feeling of indulgence.

Outside: The cottage's front garden is south-facing and benefits from hours of daylight that you can make the most of thanks to the comfortable seating. At rear of the cottage, there is a patio with garden furniture and a barbecue, as well as a second area laid to lawn. There is private off-road parking for one car next to the cottage with Type 2 EV charger, as well as bike storage if required.

Additional Information: Heavenfield Cottage has WiFi and central heating. All utilities, including logs for the wood burner, are included, as are sheets and towels. No smoking or pets are permitted in the property, which is suitable for adults and children over the age of 12. Short breaks offered (three night minimum - changeover days are Monday and Friday).
