Heavenfield Cottage is, quite simply, divine. The sympathetically converted cottage sits on St Oswald’s Farm near the village of Wall close to the border of the Northumberland National Park, amongst some of the most beautiful countryside in the North, if not the whole of England. The exceptionally high standard of accommodation has earned a coveted 5-Star rating and ROSE Award from Visit England, making it the perfect self-catering choice for couples seeking somewhere extra special for a romantic holiday.
You cannot escape the legacy of the Romans, and Hadrian in particular, in Northumberland. The farm is actually built on top of the famed Hadrian’s Wall, with some of the wall’s stones used within the construction of the cottage. The old battle site of Heavenfield is nearby and is only a short walk from the cottage. St Oswald’s Church itself stands within the field, and although mainly Victorian, has a Roman stone altar. Heavenfield and the church are at the end of the long-distance St Oswald’s Way footpath and boast what can only be described as breathtaking views.
Hexham is a lively market town five miles from Heavenfield Cottage, with an excellent array of places to eat, drink and shop. The town also has its own cinema, theatre, a medieval prison, and undoubtedly the jewel in its crown, the spectacular Hexham Abbey.
You will be spoilt for choice with fascinating museums such as Vindolanda, the Roman Army Museum and Housesteads, which will give you an understanding of the history of the area and an appreciation for why it is so unique. Alternatively, spend a few happy hours browsing nearby villages like Allendale, Corbridge and Blanchard, each of which is within 30 minutes by car.
The best way to appreciate the breathtaking beauty of the landscape is from within it, with walking and cycling two of the most popular ways to do so. In addition to the lovely countryside around Wall, you can drive to Kielder Water & Forest Park where there are miles of footpaths, watersports on the reservoir, and challenging cross-country and downhill mountain bike trails. Thanks to the lack of light pollution, Kielder has Gold Tier Dark Sky Park status, and the Northumberland International Dark Sky Park is the fourth largest dark sky park in the world. The North Pennines is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, as well as a UNESCO Global Geopark, and is only around ten miles from the cottage.
In addition to these incredible swathes of countryside, Northumberland boasts magnificent castles and country houses that include Alnwick Castle, Bamburgh Castle, Cragside and Wallington Hall. Northumberland is also within easy reach of Newcastle and Gateshead offering visitors a great shopping experience and nightlife.
However you choose to spend your time, Heavenfield Cottage is a stylish place to stay, providing guests with space, privacy, and a luxurious standard of accommodation.
For the three year's running, this owner has very proudly been awarded 'Self Catering Provider of the Year' in the North East of England Tourism Awards
