About The Mill

Burnfoot Holiday Cottages offer an exclusive collection of luxurious holiday homes in an enviable position on the outskirts of the beautiful Northumberland National Park. With the huge dark skies, wonderfully clean air and miles of stunning landscape of the National Park, and the spectacular Heritage coastline with its glorious golden sands (twenty three miles away), there are no shortage of opportunities to do as much or as little as you want at Burnfoot.

Nestling within a Site of Special Scientific Interest with glorious views over the Cheviot Hills, guests are assured a restful retreat to escape the hustle and bustle of every day life. The area is a haven for wildlife with deer, badgers, otters, owls and notoriously shy kingfishers to spot, along with sea trout and salmon that can be seen leaping out of the water when spawning as they battle their way up the babbling burns that pass through Burnfoot.

For those who want to discover Northumberland's many attractions, the holiday cottages are ideally placed for visiting Alnwick with its boutiques to browse and stunning castle; the peaceful market town of Rothbury; National Trust Cragside, a stunning Victorian country house and Hadrian's Wall, one of the most famous World Heritage Sites. Also within easy reach is the bustling harbour town of Seahouses where you can take a trip to the Farne Islands; Holy Island; Craster which is famed for its smoked kippers; Bamburgh with its golden beach fringed with sand dunes, sitting in the shadows of iconic Bamburgh Castle and Berwick-upon-Tweed which is just a stones throw from the Scottish Borders - the choices are endless and you are sure to want to return time and time again.

Beautifully converted, the holiday cottages are presented to a very high standard offering the perfect blend of traditional features with modern conveniences including oak doors, wood burning stoves, stylish kitchens and sumptuous beds, complimented by lovely Farrow and Ball shades. Outside has every bit as much appeal with plenty of space for the little ones to let off steam, swings, climbing frame, a slide, bike storage and an outdoor championship tennis court for guest use. Star gazing evenings with a local astronomer and beauty therapy for those who want some pampering whilst away can also be arranged.

Netherton is the local village and just a quarter of a mile walk from the cottages where you will find The Star Inn, a fantastic pub well known for its fine ale. The Pennine Cycleway is just a short pedal from Burnfoot and for the more adventurous mountain biker, a trip to Thrunton Woods with miles of tracks and trails is a must. When in season, some of the finest salmon and trout fishing is available on the nearby River Coquet and golfers can enjoy a round at Rothbury Golf Club (18 hole and five miles from the cottages). Why not get a birds eye view of the Cheviots and book a hang gliding lesson? With miles and miles of walking available on the doorstep, including paths that take you to the very heart of the National Park, along with some excellent climbing opportunities, there are no end of outdoor activities to satisfy the most energetic of outdoor enthusiast.

Whatever the time of year, a break at Burnfoot Holiday Cottages is sure to leave you relaxed, revitalised and wanting to return again.

Location (Northumberland National Park)

Every stone cottage has been lovingly converted on this farm steading to protect its intriguing heritage which connects it to the English industrialist Lord Armstrong when it was once part of the Cragside Estate.

The Mill sleeps eight guests and sits in an enviable position with views over the burn from the terrace - the perfect place to sit with a glass of wine of an evening watching out for the salmon leaping.

Accommodation is single level and in an L-shape, comprising:

  • Entrance hall where you can store clothes and boots in the cupboard.
  • Light and welcoming sitting room with television, DVD player, iPod docking and comfy sofas nicely placed around the inglenook fireplace which houses a log burner for cosy winter nights. Vaulted ceiling, exposed roof trusses and large windows/door let the outside in and provide a bright and airy atmosphere.
  • Kitchen/diner, separate to the living room which also has a vaulted ceiling with beams and a glass door leading outside to the terrace. Well equipped, there are plenty of oak cupboards for storage, a range cooker, dishwasher, microwave, washing machine and dining table with eight chairs.
  • Cosy bedroom with bunk beds.
  • Double bedroom with lovely views over the burn.
  • L-shaped bedroom with two single beds which is sure to be a hit with the kids!
  • Master king-size bedroom which also affords views over the burn and has an en-suite.
  • House bathroom with electric shower over the bath (including screen), WC and wash basin.

Outside: There is a lawned garden at the front of the property and also one at the back (enclosed) where you can sit on the terrace and enjoy the views and sound of the babbling burn (outdoor furniture provided for guests relaxation).

Additional information: Short breaks are available (three nights starting on a Friday and four nights from a Monday). Online booking available via the owners website - please click through. Heating, electricity, bed linen, towels and logs are included in the price. Cots and high chairs available upon request. Up to two dogs welcome (please note there will be an additional cleaning charge of £25 for one dog and £45 for two).
