Hoolit Cottage is on the northern edge of the glorious Northumberland National Park with spectacular views over the Bowmont Valley and less than a mile from the border with Scotland. The Cottage is sat within the Harelaw estate, a two acre wildlife oasis. Dating from 1593, Harelaw was rebuilt 1998 and the cottages in 2014 using the original stone. Hoolit Cottage is now a modern holiday home where couples and families can relax in comfort and feel close to nature.
Though you'll almost feel as if you're in the middle of nowhere, there's so much to see and do around Hoolit Cottage that you'll struggle to fit everything in. With the Northumberland National Park and the Scottish Borders on the doorstep, there are endless miles of footpaths (including The Pennine Way and St Cuthberts Way), bike trails and bridleways to suit every ability. The spectacular beaches of the Northumberland Coast are just over half an hour away, giving you even more gorgeous places to explore. Visit the Ford and Etal Estate and walk the field where the Battle of Flodden took place in 1513 and changed the course of Scotland's history. The highest point in Northumberland, The Cheviot, is only 12 miles from the cottage where the views (and the walk!) will leave you breathless.
Attractions in Northumberland include historic buildings like Alnwick Castle and Gardens, Bamburgh Castle, Cragside, and Walkworth Castle. Go shopping in the busy market towns of Kelso and Melrose with markets and shops selling all the provisions you'll need for your self-catering holiday. The Holy Island of Lindisfarne is a fantastic day out, as is a sightseeing boat trip around the Farne Islands to see the puffins and seals.
You might also simply enjoy some of your time back at the cottage which is set in a two acre wildlife oasis, and with its numerous feeding stations, bird boxes with cameras, bat boxes and diverse habitats is perfect for those interested in Natural History. Being on the edge of the second largest areas of protected night sky in Europe there are also some pretty dark nights here during autumn and winter, perfect for a spot of stargazing.
The owners of Hoolit Cottage live nearby in Harelaw House. They're on hand to greet guests and answer questions if you need advice about the local area or Natural History. Bookings are available all year round with short breaks outside of the peak season.
