About Anchor Cottage by the Sea

Anchor Cottage sits on the sea-front at Cresswell, with the sea directly behind it and open land stretching out in front. This former fisherman’s cottage looks straight across the North Sea and down the length of Druridge Bay, with the shoreline only moments from the door. The house has been carefully restored rather than reworked. Original stone walls and exposed beams remain, paired with two wood-burning stoves and well-finished bathrooms that make it comfortable throughout the year. Upstairs, both bedrooms have Juliet balconies facing the water, so the changing light and sound of the sea are part of the stay. Sleeping up to four guests, this holiday cottage in Northumberland feels settled and private, with space to relax without fuss.

Cresswell is a small coastal village that has kept its quiet character. It marks the southern end of Druridge Bay, where seven miles of sand run north towards Amble, backed by dunes and wildlife pools. The Drift Café is an easy walk along the beach and is popular for breakfasts, light lunches and cake, while Cresswell Ices in the village is well known for homemade ice cream. For groceries or a pub meal, Ellington is just over a mile away and has a village shop, a Co-op and The Plough pub. Rail stations at Morpeth and Alnmouth connect directly to Newcastle and Edinburgh, which makes day trips possible without a car.

Walking routes join the Northumberland Coast Path close to the cottage, leading north along the shoreline or south through the dunes towards Druridge Bay Country Park. Wildlife is part of the backdrop here, with seabirds along the shore and regular seal sightings offshore, and dolphins occasionally passing the bay. The wider area offers plenty of scope for exploring, from boat trips to Coquet Island to visits to Warkworth, Bamburgh and Alnwick castles, as well as National Trust sites such as Cragside and Wallington. Some guests spend their days out and about; others barely leave the bench above the shoreline. Both feel entirely in keeping with Anchor Cottage.

Location (Northumberland)

Accommodation Comprises: Comfortable, well-proportioned self-catering accommodation on the Northumberland Coast for up to four guests, arranged over two floors.

Ground Floor

  • Kitchen/Diner: A bright, sea-facing space where the view tends to stop conversations mid-sentence. The kitchen is fully equipped for everyday cooking, with generous worktops, quality appliances and a dining table positioned to make the most of the outlook. A wood-burning stove adds warmth on cooler days, making this a natural place to linger long after meals are finished.
  • Sitting Room: At the front of the cottage with views across open land towards the Pele Tower, this is a comfortable room for evenings in. There's ample seating, a second wood-burning stove, a Smart TV with DVD, and a relaxed, uncluttered feel that suits the pace of the setting.
  • Ground-floor bathroom with a full-size bath with shower attachment, WC and basin — useful after long beach walks or chilly sea dips.

Upstairs:

  • Bedroom 1: King-size bedroom with a Juliet balcony overlooking the sea. Wake to changing light on the water, with storage space and simple, calming décor that keeps the focus on the view.
  • Bedroom 2: Twin bedroom, also with a Juliet balcony facing the shoreline. Light and airy, with the same uninterrupted sea outlook and plenty of room to unpack.
  • Contemporary shower room with walk-in shower, WC and basin, finished to a high standard.

Outside
The front cottage garden looks across the field towards the historic Pele Tower, and is a sheltered sun-trap on sunny days. At the rear, a private bench sits on the ‘Bank Top’ just above the shoreline and is a much-loved spot for morning coffee, sunset watching and keeping an eye on the tides.

Additional Information
WiFi included. Electric central heating throughout. Two wood-burning stoves with an initial supply of logs provided for your first evening. Bed linen and bath towels are included. Private parking for one car to the rear, with additional roadside parking available at the front of the cottage. No pets or children under 16 years. No smoking or vaping.

Prices are based on two guests staying. There is a supplementary charge of £25 per night for each guest over and above two.
