Archers Retreat is a beautifully restored medieval barn tucked away on Michelmersh Manor Farm, just outside Romsey and a mile from The Malthouse gastro pub. The barn forms part of a historic Hampshire estate with over a thousand years of history and is full of character, from its exposed beams to the handmade touches that bring warmth and personality throughout. Sleeping up to four people across two bedrooms and suiting couples or families, the property has a relaxed, open-plan layout downstairs and a peaceful mezzanine level above. It’s a lovely space to unwind, with a wood-burning stove at its heart and an outdoor seating area that’s just right for your morning coffee or evening aperitif.
The barn sits within the grounds of a working farm that’s home to cows, sheep, chickens and horses. There’s a genuine sense of welcome here, with friendly owners who are happy to share the story of the farm and its surroundings. Lambing season in spring is always a highlight for younger guests, and you can even buy freshly pasteurised milk on site. Beyond the fields, the landscape rolls gently across the Test Valley, where footpaths wind through woodland, bridleways loop across the hills, and the famous River Test flows clear and shallow through quiet countryside. The Monarch Way and the Test Way are both close by, making this a great base for walkers and cyclists.
Romsey is just a short drive away and has all the essentials for a self-catering stay, including independent shops, a well-stocked market, and a good mix of pubs and restaurants. The town also has a stunning Norman abbey, a museum, and gardens at nearby Broadlands House. Further afield, you can visit the cathedral cities of Winchester and Salisbury, or take a day trip to the New Forest, Stonehenge, or the Hampshire coast. Family favourites like Marwell Zoo and Paultons Park are within easy reach too. At the end of the day, there’s nothing better than coming home to the peace of the farm and a quiet evening by the fire.

Downstairs:
The heart of the barn is its open-plan living space, where exposed beams and rustic textures blend harmoniously with modern comforts. There’s a cosy seating area with a wood-burning stove and television that is a lovely spot to curl up after a day out exploring.
A dining table for four sits near the kitchen, making mealtimes easy and sociable. The kitchen is small but well-equipped, with a hob, oven, microwave, dishwasher, washing machine, and under-counter fridge. Whether you’re prepping breakfast or putting together a picnic, everything you need is here.
Tucked behind the main space is a bedroom with a king-size bed, with its own corner of the barn for peaceful sleep.
There’s also a modern shower room with a walk-in shower, WC and basin.
First Floor (mezzanine level):
Outside: Step out to your own private seating area, with a table and chairs for four – just the spot for morning coffee or a glass of wine as the sun sets. The barn is surrounded by the fields and farm buildings of Michelmersh Manor, with countryside walks starting right from the doorstep.
Additional Information: WiFi, electricity and heating are included, as are bed linen, bath towels, and an initial supply of logs for the woodburning stove. Please note the property is not suitable for young children or guests with limited mobility, due to the open stairs and mezzanine layout. Sorry, no pets.
As a working farm, expect to see (and occasionally hear!) cows, sheep, chickens and horses nearby. Guests are welcome to purchase freshly pasteurised milk produced on site.
