About Alma Cottage

Alma Cottage is a family friendly holiday home sitting in an idyllic waterside position in the small hamlet of Pin Mill within the Suffolk Coast and Heath Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Located on the south bank of the tidal River Orwell, the cottage enjoys uninterrupted views over the unspoilt tidal estuary. With a cosy open plan living area with a multi-fuel stove, storage for bikes and watersports equipment in the garage, a small garden and two bedrooms, it is the perfect self-catering base for families, friends or couples looking to get out and about in this pretty corner of Suffolk.

Once a hub for both commercial and leisure sailing, Pin Mill is now a busy centre for all water sports with a sailing club, two boat yards and many boat moorings. Alma Cottage and Pin Mill both have strong connections with Arthur Ransome who wrote sailing books for teenagers and adults. Two books were based on his fictional family staying in Alma Cottage and sailing in the area. At the time of writing Arthur Ransome had a yacht built in the boat yard and he sailed it from Pin Mill and often visited Alma to have tea as it was then a “bed and breakfast” and teashop. If you are keen to get on the water, hop on board the Orwell Lady for a leisurely cruise down the river whilst indulging in a traditional English afternoon tea.

Pin Mill is also well known for painting and sketching, bird watching and walking along the estuary or across the Suffolk farmland. Pack a picnic and enjoy a stroll along the river, or treat yourself to a meal in the The Butt and Oyster pub. The Pin Mill Studio Cafe runs painting and ceramic workshops, or you can visit the studio of photographer Anthony Cullen who also runs photography courses. Just a kilometre away, the larger village of Chelmondiston has an excellent general store, and a fantastic pub and restaurant. There is a regular bus service to the town of Ipswich from here.

If you are keen to explore the surrounding area, the best place to start is the Suffolk Coastal Footpath which heads around the Shotley Peninsular. The mudflats and saltmarshes are a haven for birds so make sure you pack your binoculars! If you would rather travel about on two wheels there are also plenty of cycle routes to explore on the Peninsular. If you are itching to get on the water, there is a large watersports centre just five miles away at Alton Water where you can go sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, canoeing or stand up paddle boarding. You can hire bikes from here too. Three miles away the village of Shotley has Commemorative War Graves in the church yard as well as a winery, two waterside pubs and a marina. Within half an hour it is possible to visit the Stour valley of Dedham and Flatford Mill and the historic town of Colchester, whilst just a little further field there are many beautiful and historic Suffolk towns such as Lavenham, Aldeburgh, Woodbridge and Southwold.
