About Tone Dale House

Tone Dale House is a big house for group self-catering holidays in Somerset. From its original construction in 1797 as a mill owner's mansion to its current incarnation as a holiday rental, it has all you need for a memorable stay, including huge areas to entertain and socialise, beautiful bedrooms, gorgeous period features, and 4.5 acres of private grounds. With space for 21 people in the main house and a further ten more in the converted stables, it's a fantastic setting for your hen weekend, milestone birthday, or for a fun reunion with your extended family and friends. It's in a quiet spot on the outskirts of Wellington, less than a mile from the Duke of Wellington pub and within strolling distance of a cafe and a small supermarket.

Wellington is a traditional town seven miles from Taunton and convenient for the M5. It has a reputation as a "food town" and is perfect for when you've worked up an appetite walking and cycling in the Blackdown and Brendan Hills. There is plenty to do in the area, from admiring the spectacular views from the top of Glastonbury Tor before wandering around the abbey and town crammed with eclectic shops and businesses to walking around Cheddar Gorge and Wookey Hole Caves (cheesy Star Wars jokes are essential). Take the kids to Diggerland, where they can also accommodate grown up's parties. Or visit Crealy Adventure Park, Quadworld, Tropiquaria, and historic properties such as Cothay House, Knightshays, and Killerton House. Book a ride on the West Somerset Railway and admire the scenic countryside from a heritage steam train, or pay a visit to Sheppey's Cider Farm to see the orchard, eat at the cafe/restaurant, or buy local delicacies from the award-winning farm shop.

The Big House Co expertly manages Tone Dale House. They know that no detail is too small to plan a fun and memorable group house stay. They can help arrange on-site activities like laser clay shooting, massage and manicures, karaoke, casino nights, bouncy castles, and casino or murder mystery nights. Other nearby activities for you and your guests include horse riding, quad biking and off-road karting, fly-fishing, 4x4 driving experiences, and paintball. The property is available for weekends, mid-week stays, and week-long bookings.

Accommodation Comprises:

Tone Dale House is a beautiful Georgian mansion with decor and furnishings that enhance the period features. It has been sympathetically modernised to feel welcoming and comfortable to 21st Century guests. Accommodation is over three levels.

Ground Floor:

  • Wonderful entrance hall big enough to act as an additional reception room. It has lots of space to greet guests and a curving staircase rising to the first floor. It leads into the main hall and on to the reception rooms.
  • Elegant sitting room filled with natural light from tall sash windows. Light the log fire for additional atmosphere in cold weather and settle down to chat and unwind.
  • Study/small living room with two sofas, a TV, and shelves crammed with books to suit all ages.
  • Formal dining room with space for everyone to sit and eat together. It's the perfect backdrop for your celebration meal.
  • Less formal meals are taken in the breakfast room. It's a gorgeous place to start the day with its original William Morris wallpaper and garden views.
  • Hire a karaoke machine and sing and dance the night away in the party room where there is some seating and lots of floor space. This room is air-conditioned with a 60-inch plasma screen, and integrated sounds and lights. The party room is in a separate wing to the bedrooms so won't disturb those who need to go to bed early.
  • Games room with table tennis, pool, and table football. Anyone missing - especially teens - are likely to be in here!
  • Whether you do it yourself or bring in a chef to do the cooking for you, all you need is in the kitchen. It's extremely well-equipped for group self-catering.
  • No big house is complete without a few extra cloakrooms for convenience. There are two on this level.
  • A utility room and a scullery have laundry and cleaning facilities.

First Floor:

  • Eight of the eleven bedrooms in the main house are on the first floor.
  • Railway: twin room with two single beds and an ensuite bathroom.
  • Garden: zip and link beds can be configured as a king or two single beds. There is an ensuite shower room.
  • Skiing: double bed and storage.
  • Mountain: double bed with storage.
  • Old Nursery: two single beds, storage and a beautiful decorative fireplace.
  • Puttee: connects to the Old Nursery with a king or two single beds.
  • Rugby: double bedroom with an ensuite shower room.
  • Laundry: large bedroom suite with zip and link beds which can either be made up as a king or two singles, with a gallery seating area. Ensuite with a walk in shower.
  • Two shower rooms with a shower, WC and a handbasin.
  • Two bathrooms with a bath, WC and a handbasin.

Top Floor:

  • Three former bedrooms for maids are interconnected. Attic Bedroom One with two single beds.
  • Attic Bedroom Two has zip and link beds to configure as two single or one king bed.
  • Attic Bedroom Three has a pitched ceiling and a single bed.

The Old Stables: Converted stables next to the main house provides accommodation for ten more people in five bedrooms with two bathrooms. Two bedrooms and a walk in shower room are on the ground floor. This property is only rented with the main house and is not for separate bookings.

Outside: Tone Dale House boasts over four acres of beautifully maintained grounds that include a mill stream, lawns, mature trees, a seating and barbecue area, and an outdoor hot tub. Children must be supervised in the garden due to the Mill stream and hot tub. There is ample off-street parking.

Additional Information: Utilities, WiFi, bed linen, bath and hot tub towels are included. Two well-behaved dogs are welcome by arrangement. Extra charges apply. Smoking is not permitted. Prices quoted are for the Main House and Stables (31 guests). Please see the owner's website if you only want to book the Main House.
