Rheidiol Cottage is a 19th-century holiday cottage in St Davids with one of those rare combinations: character indoors, a private garden out back and much of Britain's smallest city lying just beyond the front door. Sleeping five in a king, twin and single bedroom, it dates from 1890 and has been restored with a light touch. The sage-green kitchen is a real feature, with timber cabinetry, patterned tiles, an island, and a modern range cooker that gives it far more personality than the usual holiday-let kitchen. It opens into the sitting area, where an L-shaped sofa, Smart TV and games cover quieter evenings and sliding glass doors lead straight onto the patio. Welcoming restaurants and pubs like The Bishops and The Farmers Arms are only a few minutes' walk from the door.
Then there is St Davids itself. The cathedral is around a minute away on foot, and the Pembrokeshire Coast Path is roughly 50 yards from the cottage. That makes it entirely possible to spend several days here without planning everything around the car. Walk to the cathedral and Bishop's Palace, browse the galleries and independent shops, or decide where to eat as you go. The Bench is nearby for ice cream, Losh's is handy for picnic pasties, and The Mill Cafe, The Bishops and Saffron are among the local choices highlighted by the owner. CK's supermarket, including its bakery and Post Office, is just across the way. For a longer walk, head towards St Non's Chapel and Well, about a 15-minute walk, then join the coast path. Turn one way for Caerfai; the other takes you towards the little harbour at Porthclais.
The coast quickly takes over once you leave the city streets. Whitesands Bay is less than a 10-minute drive from Rheidiol Cottage, with surfing and a broad sweep of beach, while the St Davids Peninsula opens up mile after mile of walking. Porthgain's harbour and old quarry workings make an interesting stop to the north; nearby Abereiddi has the flooded quarry better known as the Blue Lagoon. Solva brings colourful harbour views, and Newgale adds another long beach popular with surfers and families. Kayaking, coasteering, sea fishing, and boat trips are all available locally, and Skomer is known for its seasonal puffin colony. Tenby, Narbeth, and Folly Farm are all under an hour by car. The best thing about coming back is how little effort the evening requires. Open the garden doors if the weather holds, or head out again on foot. Dinner, a pint and an evening wander around St Davids can all happen without anybody drawing the short straw and driving.
