Cotton Cottage sits on the hillside between the Edale and Hope valleys, with National Trust land stretching out from the doorstep and open views across pasture and woodland. The house sleeps five people in three bedrooms, and can accept two well behaved dogs. It suits families with older children (8 years and over) or small groups of friends planning a walking-focused break where days revolve around the outdoors and evenings are spent unwinding together in comfort. The Cheshire Cheese pub is within walking distance (0.5 mile), making it easy to round off a long day on the hills with good food and a relaxed drink before heading back. This is a welcoming and well-located cottage, ideal for people who value scenery, space, and an easy connection to the landscape.
Hope village is at the heart of the Hope Valley and has retained a strong sense of everyday life alongside its history. Independent shops include a convenience store (Spar), deli/sandwich shop, and butcher and farm shop, making it easy to pick up supplies without relying on the car, while cafés and pubs offer everything from strong coffee to delicious meals to satisfy even the hungriest hiker. The village church of St Peter's dates back to the 14th century and is well worth a visit. Stop by for a service or simply to enjoy the peace and serenity left by centuries of prayer and reflection. Castleton lies just along the valley, known for its show caves and hilltop Peveril Castle, while Edale is located along the Edale Valley and marks the official start of the Pennine Way. Losehill House, a mere ten minutes' walk from the cottage, offers a more refined dining option with views across the valley towards Win Hill.
It’s hard to beat this as a destination for a walking holiday, no matter what your level of skill and energy. Footpaths lead directly from the cottage up to open access land, linking into a network of routes that range from gentle valley walks to high-level ridge routes. The Great Ridge walk runs between Mam Tor and Lose Hill, offering expansive views across the Dark Peak on clear days, while Winnats Pass cuts dramatically through limestone cliffs nearby. Further afield, the Upper Derwent Valley provides miles of traffic-free walking and cycling routes around Ladybower Reservoir, while Padley Gorge and Burbage offer woodland and gritstone edge walks in very different scenery. Hathersage adds shops, cafés and an outdoor swimming pool, while Eyam’s history and surrounding countryside make for a thoughtful day out. With so much accessible on foot or within a short drive, Cotton Cottage offers a genuinely well-connected base for exploring this part of the Peak District National Park.
