About The Old Piggery

The Old Piggery is one of the most dog-friendly cottages in Norfolk. The former farm building is now a comfortably stylish self-catering holiday home where up to six guests can sleep in comfort, or up to 16 people if you book the cottage together with the adjacent Running Hare Barn. There is no limit to the number of dogs who can stay, and no extra costs for taking your dog on holiday. The country-chic interior is the ideal foil for the expansive countryside views, and when you factor in the miles of dog-friendly beaches and footpaths in the vicinity, this is a family holiday that everyone can enjoy.

One of the reasons this cottage is perfect for a relaxing pet-friendly holiday is not only for its quiet location on the edge of East Ruston village but also because of the many footpaths that weave their way around the countryside, with little or no livestock to avoid. A gentle way to stretch your legs is along the circular route that leads beside the Dilham Canal and around Honing Common, or along part of the 56-mile long distance Weavers Way to Stalham and Brumstead Common. There are also pooch-approved walks around Bacton and Trunch woods, Happisburgh Common and Briggate.

It isn't just kids who love a trip to the seaside - dogs also love the opportunity to run and play on the sand. The water at Sea Palling is suitable for swimming and paddling, while Cart Gap is better for more timid dogs who do not like being around lots of other people or animals. Both of these beaches have restrictions between May and October, while Horsea and Waxham are no-go zones for dogs in the winter when scores of seals use the beach and dunes as a maternity ward and nursery for their pups. Winterton-on-Sea is dog-friendly all year round.

The Old Piggery is ideal for families and friends who want a fuss-free holiday in a beautiful location, and who do not want to sacrifice style and comfort for the sake of staying somewhere their dog is also welcome. The owners of The Old Piggery and Running Hare Barn have created a space where no compromise is necessary and where everyone can enjoy the beautiful surroundings.

The Old Piggery is a first-rate conversion with eco-friendly features that include an electric vehicle charging point that guests can use free of charge. Accommodation is all on the same level.

Accommodation Comprises:

  • Open-plan kitchen/dining and living room with exposed oak beams and flagstone floors with underfloor heating that uses a ground source heat pump and renewable energy.
  • Sitting area with leather sofas and armchairs, a flatscreen TV with a DVD player and home theatre system. The log burner is the perfect accompaniment to a cosy winter afternoon, while in summer guests can open the glass doors onto the patio and invite the good weather inside.
  • Fitted kitchen with hand-crafted cabinets and plenty of preparation and storage space. Good quality appliances and ample utensils and equipment make self-catering easy.
  • Pine dining table with six chairs and plenty of space for serve-yourself dishes.
  • Master bedroom with zip link beds that can either be a kingsized bed or two single beds. Please let the owner know your preference when booking. A wardrobe and chest of drawers provide proper storage so guests can unpack and feel settled. The ensuite has a rainfall head, WC and handbasin.
  • Second room with a Victorian-style double bed, proper storage and garden views.
  • Third bedrooms with a view over the courtyard at the rear of the cottage, good storage, and a zip link bed that can either be two singles (default layout) or one kingsized bed.
  • Family bathroom with a rainfall shower over the bath, WC and handbasin.

Outside: Spacious enclosed courtyard with garden furniture and a gas barbecue - perfect for relaxed summer meals in the sunshine. Lawn area to the front of the cottage, and off-street parking for up to four cars as well as electric vehicle charging point.

Additional Information: All utilities, including WiFi, wood for the log burner and gas for the barbecue are included, as are sheets and bath towels. Guests to supply beach towels if they are needed, but the owner provides a store of dog towels, throws and bowls for guests to use during their stay. The Old Piggery is available all year round and, depending on availability, can be booked together with Running Hare Barn to accommodate bigger groups. Please see the owner's website for details. Smoking is not permitted. Double external doors allow wheelchair access into the property from outside, however, once inside, doorways are standard size. Travel cot available by arrangement. Unlimited dogs welcome.
