Living
Sycamore Cottage was once the steading bakery, and you can still sense that heritage in the building's proportions and character. This one-bedroom cottage sleeping two has been converted with couples firmly in mind - everything's been thought through from the powerful corner shower to the layout that gives you space without rattling around. The king bedroom feels generous, and the open-plan living area with its pretty kitchen flows nicely, so you're not hemmed into separate rooms. Your private patio looks across Finnich Estate's 220 acres towards Ben Lomond, 13 miles away. Being able to walk straight from the cottage into the woods or up hills for views of Loch Lomond makes this a gorgeously peaceful location. The Clachan Inn in Drymen (Scotland's oldest licensed pub since 1734) sits three miles away when you fancy an evening out.
Three miles away, Drymen village has bags of authentic character and is conveniently on the route of the West Highland Way. The village square still occasionally hosts Highland cattle sales, and pipe bands perform on Thursday evenings in summer. The Clachan Inn's first landlady was Rob Roy MacGregor's sister, so you're drinking in proper Scottish outlaw history. Drymen Bakery & Deli offers excellent breads and local produce, and the butcher stocks quality, locally reared meat. Skoosh Cafe and St Mocha Coffee Shop both do decent coffee. Killearn, three miles in the other direction, has different shops and pubs to give you a choice. Glengoyne Distillery runs whisky tours daily. The West Highland Way passes through the village during the season, so the village has good facilities without feeling overrun.
Loch Lomond National Park stretches north and west from here. The loch itself runs 24 miles, with everything from busy Balloch at the south to quiet walking on the eastern shore. Balmaha, four miles from Drymen, has the Oak Tree Inn plus boat trips to Inchcailloch Island. Ben Lomond at 974m challenges fit walkers starting from Rowardennan. The West Highland Way runs 96 miles to Fort William for serious hikers. National Cycle Route 7 provides mostly car-free cycling linking Loch Lomond with the Trossachs. Stirling Castle sits 20 miles east with royal history going back centuries. Glasgow lies 15 miles south when you need city facilities or want culture and restaurants. The Trossachs spreads north with more lochs, forests, and mountains. This holiday rental near Loch Lomond works particularly well for couples looking for romantic escapes with countryside walks, but with city access nearby.
