Living
Rowan Cottage is all about that view. The large west-facing window in the open-plan living area frames Ben Lomond, 13 miles distant across open parkland, and you'll find yourself drawn to it throughout the day as the light changes. This one-bedroom cottage sleeping two has been converted from the old steading with an eye on making the most of the setting. The layout works well with the L-shaped kitchen at one end and the living space flowing naturally without feeling cramped. Everything is here for comfortable self-catering, including Nespresso pods, condiments, and welcome treats. Your private patio catches the evening sun brilliantly. The 220-acre estate surrounding you means woodland walks and hill climbs start from the cottage door. The Clachan Inn, three miles away in Drymen (Scotland's oldest licensed pub dating to 1734), serves good food and local ales if cooking does not appeal.
Drymen village is three miles off and sits right on the West Highland Way, so walkers pass through all season with their big packs and hiking boots. The village has kept its character, though, with that handsome square where cattle were traded centuries back. The Clachan Inn's first landlady was Rob Roy MacGregor's sister, which tells you something about the history here. Drymen Bakery & Deli does excellent bread and local produce, the butcher stocks quality meat, and Skoosh Cafe plus St Mocha Coffee Shop serve decent brews. Killearn, three miles in the other direction, offers alternative shops and pubs. Pipe bands perform at Piping on the Square on Thursday evenings in July and August, bringing a proper Highland atmosphere. Glengoyne Distillery is also only a few miles away and hosts whisky tours daily if that's your thing.
Loch Lomond National Park provides the setting for everything around here. The loch spans 24 miles with varied character from busy Balloch in the south to the peaceful eastern shore at Balmaha and Rowardennan. Balmaha, four miles from Drymen, has the Oak Tree Inn and boat trips to Inchcailloch Island. Ben Lomond (974m) rises from Rowardennan, challenging fit walkers to Scotland's most southerly Munro summit. The West Highland Way stretches 96 miles to Fort William for long-distance hikers. National Cycle Route 7 links Loch Lomond with the Trossachs on mostly traffic-free paths. Stirling Castle lies 20 miles east of the city and has centuries of royal Scottish history. Glasgow sits 15 miles south, providing city facilities when you need museums, shopping, restaurants, and culture. The Trossachs spreads north with more lochs, forests, and mountains. This holiday rental near Loch Lomond works brilliantly for couples wanting peaceful countryside with mountain views but city access close enough for convenience.
