Birch Cottage occupies part of the beautifully restored red sandstone steading at Finnich Estate, where thick walls, high ceilings, and original features remind you this was once a working farm. Sleeping four across two floors, this cottage has been fitted out to a high standard while keeping its authentic agricultural character intact. The south-facing patio catches good sun and looks out over parkland towards Ben Lomond rising 13 miles distant. Being on a private 220-acre estate means you can walk, run, or just wander through woods and up hills without seeing another soul. The hemlock wood stairs lead to carpeted bedrooms upstairs, while downstairs flows between the kitchen, dining, and living spaces. Drymen village sits three miles away with The Clachan Inn (Scotland's oldest licensed pub) and Drymen Inn both serving good food and local ales.
Drymen acts as a gateway to Loch Lomond's eastern shore and has kept its village feel despite the tourists. The village square, where cattle were once traded, now hosts Piping on the Square in summer when local pipe bands perform on Thursday evenings. Drymen Bakery & Deli does excellent breads and local produce, while the butcher supplies quality meat. Skoosh Cafe and St Mocha Coffee Shop serve decent coffee and cakes. Killearn, three miles away, offers alternative shopping and eating options. The West Highland Way passes through Drymen, so you'll see plenty of walkers with big packs during the season. Glengoyne Distillery sits three miles away, offering tours seven days a week if you fancy learning how Scotch whisky is made.
Loch Lomond National Park provides the backdrop to everything here. The loch itself stretches 24 miles, with everything from water sports at Balloch to quiet eastern shore walking. Balmaha, four miles from Drymen, has boat trips to Inchcailloch Island and the Oak Tree Inn for lunch. Ben Lomond (974m) challenges fit walkers from Rowardennan, while gentler walks circle the lower loch. The West Highland Way runs 96 miles from Milngavie to Fort William if long-distance hiking appeals. National Cycle Route 7 provides mostly traffic-free cycling between Loch Lomond and Callander. Stirling lies 20 miles east with its castle and Wallace Monument. Glasgow sits 15 miles south when you need city facilities and excitement. The Trossachs, with more lochs and forests, stretch north. This holiday home near Loch Lomond suits active families and couples who want countryside access without being totally remote.
