Oak Cottage is beside the courtyard of a converted 19th-century red sandstone steading on the private Finnich Estate, where 220 acres of parkland, woods, and hills stretch out in all directions. This two-bedroom family-friendly cottage sleeps four comfortably (or five at a push) across two floors with south and west-facing aspects that pull in good light. The conversion has been carried out to a high standard while preserving the character of the old farm buildings. Those views across 13 miles of countryside to Ben Lomond are something else, especially first thing in the morning or at sunset. You can walk or run straight from the cottage onto estate roads and tracks through woods, or climb the hill for panoramic views north and west across Loch Lomond and the mountains beyond. The Clachan Inn and Drymen Inn both sit three miles away in Drymen village for evenings when you don't want to cook.
Drymen and Killearn are your nearest villages, both just three miles off and both with proper character. Drymen sits on the village square where farmers traded Highland cattle for centuries, and The Clachan Inn claims to be Scotland's oldest licensed pub (first licensed in 1734). The first landlady was Rob Roy MacGregor's sister, so you're drinking in proper Scottish history. Both villages have good shops, including Drymen Bakery & Deli, butchers, and the Spar for basics. Skoosh Cafe does decent food, while Drymen Inn welcomes dogs by the fireplace. The West Highland Way passes right through Drymen, making it busy with walkers during the season, while the Rob Roy Way starts from the village square. Piping on the Square happens Thursday evenings in July and August when local pipe bands perform. Glengoyne Distillery sits three miles away, offering tours seven days a week if you love tasting local whisky.
Loch Lomond National Park stretches out from here, offering endless possibilities. The West Highland Way is Britain's most famous long-distance path, and you can tackle sections or walk the whole 96 miles to Fort William. Balmaha, on Loch Lomond's eastern shore, is four miles from Drymen, with boat trips to Inchcailloch Island. Rowardennan at the loch's head is where most people start climbing Ben Lomond, Scotland's most southerly Munro. The National Cycle Route 7 (Lochs and Glens Way) runs nearby for cyclists. Glasgow lies 15 miles south offering city facilities, museums, shopping, and restaurants when you need urban life. Stirling Castle sits 20 miles east with its royal history. The Trossachs stretch north and east with more lochs, forests, and mountains. This holiday rental near Loch Lomond works year-round because there's genuinely loads to do whatever the weather throws at you.
