About Lake Cottage

Please note: Saturday start day and a minimum stay of 5 nights.

Lake Cottage is located at the end of a quiet country lane bordering the beautiful Hawes Water Lake in the Silverdale & Arnside AONB. It is adjacent to the nature reserve and guests have boardwalk access to the owner's lakeside cabin and jetty for swimming and fishing... or simply enjoying the beautiful lake views with its resident otters, kingfishers and marsh harriers.

Fully refurbished a few years ago the cottage is the owner’s own lakeland retreat and is fully equipped with a well-stocked pantry, books and maps, games and hi-fi, making it a true ‘home from home’ the minute you walk through the door. It is a characterful, stone-built cottage which retains many original features including exposed beams, inglenook fireplace with log-burning stove and range oven with rooms thoughtfully furnished and decorated in a style sympathetic to its past.

Accommodation is offered for up to four people, with one double and one twin bedroom, both having long views over the marsh and lake to the woods and hills beyond. The period bathroom is newly fitted, with pine flooring, spacious shower and heated towel radiator. The living room is warm and cosy with antique furniture, rugs and many original artworks, whilst the quarry-tiled kitchen is very well equipped with standalone units, dresser and farmhouse table helping retain a homely ambience whilst offering comprehensive cooking and self-catering facilities including coffee-machine, microwave, fridge and large double oven.

Outside is a sunny gravelled courtyard with Weber and picnic table – ideal for summer breakfasts and barbeques!  Steps lead to the lawned garden which has sitting areas in both sun or shade and a newly-planted wildflower/meadowed area that is often frequented by deer in the early mornings. A path meanders through a willow arch and small orchard to the reedbed, where an 80 metre boardwalk takes you through overhanging hazel, alder and willow trees to the lakeside. Guests have the use of a large timber cabin overlooking the lake with a private jetty, picnic table and swimming ladder. The cabin has a dining table, chairs and sofa with bi-folds opening to give glorious views of the lake. The lake is spring fed and fringed with lilies in summer with crystal clear water that is perfect for swimming and fishing and teems with wildlife.

The cottage is just a mile from Silverdale village with its pubs and shops, and four miles from the larger villages of Arnside and Carnforth. It sits at a gateway to the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and Trough of Bowland, giving access to a wide range of outdoor amenities, although with wonderful woodland walks in all directions from the front door there is often little need to venture far.

Accommodation Comprises:

Lakeside Cottage is a 200-year-old former gamekeeper's cottage that has been sympathetically restored using traditional materials and methods, and updated to provide comfortable holiday accommodation all year round. The furnishings have been carefully chosen to suit the age of the property while still being appropriate for modern couples and families.

Downstairs:

  • Living room with inglenook fireplace and log burning stove, handmade rug over original pine floorboards, well-stocked bookshelves with maps and DVD collection, leather sofas, TV, original artworks, quality sound system, games, maps, walk books.
  • Traditional 'unfitted' kitchen with dresser, range cooker, fridge-freezer, microwave, coffee machine and well-stocked shelves of day-to-day herbs, salts and spices, oils and cooking extras which guests are welcome to use. Ample provision of pots, pans, casseroles and kitchen accessories. Scrubbed pine farmhouse table with elm chairs and pew seating. Original features include quarry tiled floor, exposed beams and inglenook fireplace which now houses the range cooker.
  • Stairs lead down from the kitchen to the garden room in the lower ground floor with desk, chairs and bookcase. This room is forgiving of dirty boots and with its large radiator is ideal for drying wet clothing and damp dogs! It opens directly onto the sheltered gravel courtyard with BBQ, picnic table and parasol.
  • A small, wood-panelled bedroom leads off the garden room with small double bed and wardrobe which is used by the owners as supplementary accommodation for the family, but that may be available for guests by special arrangement.

Upstairs:

  • Bedroom with a double bed with views over the garden to the lake beyond.
  • Twin bedroom with views over the garden and lake.
  • Bathroom with traditional sanitaryware, spacious shower and heated towel radiator.

Outside: Lake Cottage has a sunny, walled courtyard with picnic table and barbeque. Parking on gravelled driveway for up to three cars with large garage for storing bikes and equipment. Sunny lawned area has benches, loungers and garden chairs and leads through a small orchard to raised boardwalk crossing reedbeds to timber cabin with veranda on lake. Glorious views from private jetty with table, bench, swim ladder and fishing.

Additional Information: The cottage is available all year round. Prices including linen, towels and electricity. Heating supplement payable during winter months based on metered usage. Short breaks may be possible certain times of year. Up to two well-behaved dogs welcome with prior agreement from owner. No smoking. For further information see owners website.
