Alden Cottage is a lovingly restored 17th-century holiday home set deep in Lancashire’s Forest of Bowland – an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty known for its rolling hills and big skies. This award-winning bolthole for two mixes period features with modern touches, where thick stone walls and oak beams sit comfortably alongside a well-equipped kitchen and cosy furnishings. It’s a great spot for couples, whether you’re planning lazy mornings with a book or long walks through the countryside. Then, when hunger calls, there is the Aspinall Arms just down the road in the hamlet of Mitton - a riverside pub serving good food and a selection of guest ales. Alternatively, you can relax and eat at the Shireburn Arms in the village of Hurst Green - perfect after completing the famous Tolkien Trail.
Hurst Green itself is a picture of rural Lancashire life with stone cottages and, at its heart, Stonyhurst College - an impressive historic school founded in 1593 with links to JRR Tolkien and with open grounds to attract history and architecture lovers alike. Just four miles northeast lies Clitheroe, a lively market town with independent shops, cafés, and the imposing Clitheroe Castle overlooking the Ribble. Its centuries-old markets still run weekly, and the town has a reputation for excellent food, with local delis, farm shops, and artisan producers dotted among its winding streets.
There's plenty to see nearby when you feel like venturing out. From the peaceful ruins of Sawley Abbey to the lived-in grandeur of Browsholme Hall. For a change of pace, Lancaster is around forty minutes away and has enough shops, museums, and restaurants to fill a day. Walkers and wildlife lovers are spoiled for choice here too, with the Ribble Way and other trails criss-crossing the surrounding hills and moors. Birdlife thrives in these parts – look out for curlews, red grouse and hen harriers if you're out early. And with the Yorkshire Dales National Park just twenty minutes up the road, it's easy to mix days out with time spent pottering at the cottage. Alden Cottage is a place that makes it easy to slow down.
