About Little Northcourt

Little Northcourt offers a rare opportunity to stay in a Jacobean manor house. It's hard to believe this charming property was considered modest in its day, having been built as quarters for servants. Having undergone extensive renovations in 1905 and again this century, it's now a gorgeous self-catering cottage accommodating six people in three bedrooms with spacious living areas and extensive gardens. Little Northcourt is part of a more substantial property in Shorwell on the Isle of Wight, within walking distance of the village shop and local pub, The Crown Inn. The house is perfect for families and friends who want a holiday home close to everything yet quiet and peaceful.

The Isle of Wight makes such a wonderful holiday destination because of its beautiful beaches and fantastic scenery and because everything is conveniently close. You're never more than a 20-minute drive from anywhere, so your days out can be full of fun without you having to spend hours in the car reaching beaches and attractions. Shorwell is in the south-west of the Island, in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It's a 25-minute drive around the coast from the ferry terminal at Yarmouth, where you'll arrive if you depart from Lymington. If travelling from Southampton or Portsmouth to Ryde, it's a 25-minute drive. Between the ferry crossing of the Solent and the short, scenic drive from the ferry, it's probably the most relaxed start to a holiday you'll have!

Shorwell is around two miles from the south coast, sitting quietly near chalk downs, where maritime plants and birds thrive. Guests can walk or cycle there, using the island's extensive network of way-marked footpaths, bridleways and cycling routes. Local attractions include The Needles, Osborne House, Blackgang Chine, the Botanic Gardens at Ventnor, Dinosaur Isle, and The Garlic Farm. Watersports are understandably popular all year round. Cowes is famous for its sailing conditions. Surfing, kite surfing, coasteering and kayaking are popular, and there's a good variety of businesses providing equipment hire and tuition for visitors who want it.

Little Northcourt is in the west wing of the manor house. The owners live in another part of the house and are present to greet guests and answer any questions.

Location (Isle of Wight)

Accommodation Comprises:

The property sleeps up to 16 people (14 adults + 2 children) in 7 bedrooms all with their own private bathroom, with large rooms downstairs and a private rear garden.

Downstairs:

  • Beautiful living/dining room with windows on three sides looking out onto the garden, flagstone floors, original beams and a stone fireplace with an open fire. The owner has carefully furnished the room in a style that suits the history of the building yet is comfortable for 21st Century visitors. The room has three deep sofas, a piano, and a smart TV with Netflix. The games/dining table seats six people.
  • A sunroom off the living room makes it possible to feel like you're sitting in the garden even if it's too chilly to be outside. Doors open onto the private patio and walled garden.
  • Stylish kitchen with oak cabinets and a modern range with a double oven and a six-burner hob. You'll find all of the equipment, utensils and appliances you'll need for self-catering, as well as plenty of space to prepare meals and store groceries. Many supermarkets deliver to Little Northcourt, with some guests arranging for their shopping to be delivered after they arrive. There's a sunny breakfast room next to the kitchen to seat 10+.
  • Next to the kitchen, the entrance hall contains a large oak table with space for 14 adults to eat together, with flag-stone floors and a feature fireplace (not in use).
  • ‘Brighstone’ bedroom with a double bed and views onto the garden. Immediately adjacent is a shower room with WC and wash basin, washing machine and tumble drier.

First floor:

  • "Bowcombe" is down a hallway from the other two bedrooms, overlooking the rear gardens. It also has a super king/twin bed, an antique wardrobe and a chest of drawers. The ensuite has a shower over the bath, WC and a handbasin.
  • “Chillerton” bedroom is usually used as a twin bedroom but the beds can be linked together to form a super-king double. This bedroom has views onto the garden and Downs and a bathroom along the corridor with bath and shower over, WC and handbasin.
  • "Brook" is a huge room with dual-aspect windows framing gorgeous garden views. The super-king bed can be separated into two 3ft-wide singles, and there is ample storage. Brook has the biggest bathroom with an impressive central freestanding roll-top bath, walk-in shower, heated towel rail/radiator, WC and a handbasin.
  • "Compton" is a spacious room with views of the garden. The king zip-link bed can be separated into two single beds if preferred. There is an antique wardrobe, bedside tables with reading lights, and a dressing table with a mirror. The ensuite has a shower, WC and a handbasin.

Second Floor:

  • “Limerstone” has a king size bed plus two extra single beds, with dual aspect windows with fine views over the gardens. Across the landing is a bathroom with a small, child bath, shower, WC and handbasin.
  • Games room with table tennis and small snooker/pool table.

Outside: Little Northcourt has a south-facing walled garden with a lawn and a terrace with garden furniture for eating outside in warm weather. There is a big area of lawn at the front of the house, shared with the adjoining wing of the house, that is ideal for playing ball games. A tennis court is available at specific times. The property has ample off-street parking. Hot tubs can be hired on request.

Additional Information: All utilities, WiFi, bed linen and bath towels are provided. A basket of logs is provided for the open fire (October – May) with additional logs available to purchase.
