Brookside is a Grade II listed Georgian holiday house in Whitchurch, sleeping up to 24 guests in the Wye Valley. Built in the early 1800s, it has the proportions you could hope for in a grand house of this age: tall sash windows, high ceilings, big reception rooms and fires that come into their own after a winter walk. It even retains an original servants' bell among the surviving period details. Yet this house was meant to be used rather than admired from a distance. Eight bedrooms accommodate large and multi-generational groups, the dining room seats all 24 guests at once, and a drawing room and snug give people somewhere to break away from the crowd. A ground-floor twin bedroom has a shower room next door for guests who prefer to avoid the stairs. Three dogs can join the holiday, and parking for ten cars removes one of the usual headaches of organising a gathering on this scale.
Outside, Brookside changes gear. Around 0.6 acres provide room for games, barbecues and afternoons in the garden, with a heated outdoor swimming pool likely to attract plenty of attention. The stone games and social barn has table tennis and a pool table, giving teenagers and competitive adults somewhere of their own. A hot tub can also be hired by arrangement. Directly opposite the house is a fenced children's playground, alongside an outdoor gym and table tennis facilities. Despite all that space, you are not cut off from everyday conveniences. Whitchurch has a shop, cafe, and pub within walking distance, and you can reach the River Wye on foot in around ten minutes. Brookside is in a village setting, so amplified music, fireworks and raucous events are not permitted; this is a house for sociable family holidays and celebrations rather than late-night parties.
The famously pictureseque Wye Valley gives you plenty of reasons to leave the pool for a few hours. Symonds Yat Rock is only 1.5 miles away, with far-reaching views over the river, woodland trails and one of Britain's best-known peregrine watching sites. Goodrich Castle is two miles from Brookside, rising above the Wye with battlements to explore and a history stretching back to the 11th century. This stretch of the river is popular for canoeing and kayaking, and walkers can choose riverside paths, Coppett Hill and the forests around Symonds Yat. Monmouth and Ross-on-Wye are close enough for independent shops and cafes, and the Forest of Dean adds caves, cycle routes and family attractions. Tintern Abbey, Hereford, and several border castles make longer outings worthwhile. Plenty fills a week, though an empty day in the diary is no hardship here: swim, read in the garden, start a pool tournament in the barn, then bring everyone back around one table for dinner.
