Yellow Shepherd's Hut brings together two of the things the Outer Hebrides do best: spectacular scenery and complete peace. Located at Mangersta Croft Holidays in a tiny coastal village on the Uig peninsula, this beautifully handcrafted shepherd's hut sleeps two guests and enjoys wide views across croft land towards the Atlantic. Every inch has been thoughtfully designed, creating a surprisingly efficient retreat with a comfortable double bed, private shower room, kitchenette and everything needed for an easy self-catering stay. After a day outside, settle in with a book or enjoy a quiet evening watching the weather rolling in across the ocean. Guests are welcome to bring up to two dogs too, so nobody has to miss out on the adventure.
The beach is only a five-minute walk from the hut, and chances are you'll have plenty of space to yourself when you get there. Around Mangersta, cliff paths, hidden coves, sea stacks, and sweeping moorland provide endless opportunities for walking, photography, and wildlife watching, with white-tailed eagles, seals, and seabirds all regular sights. Despite the wonderfully peaceful setting, everyday essentials are close at hand. The Uig Community Shop, around five miles away, stocks groceries, fuel, and fresh supplies, and has a cash machine, while Uig Sands Restaurant is around a seven-minute drive and is well known for its seafood and views across the bay. If you're tempted by coffee and homemade cake after a morning exploring, the Uig Community Tearoom and Museum are only a little further along the road, with The Edge Café also worth the drive for lunch overlooking the Atlantic.
Lewis rewards those who enjoy taking the slower route. Spend a day exploring the Callanish Standing Stones, visit the Blackhouse Museum or join a boat trip from Loch Roag in search of seals, seabirds and the Flannan Isles. Harris is close enough for a scenic day out before returning to the quiet of Mangersta. As darkness falls, wander down to the shared stone fire pit, where guests gather around the flames beneath some of the clearest night skies in Britain. It's a simple pleasure, but somehow it feels entirely fitting here.
