Milbanke is a quietly distinctive coastal cottage created from the former stables of Ashley Combe Mansion and set in a wonderfully private position overlooking Porlock Bay. With the sea spread out directly in front of you and a short private path leading down to the stony beach, the setting is both peaceful and special. Worthy stream runs along the edge of the garden, adding to the relaxing soundscape. The cottage sits slightly elevated above the shoreline, allowing wide views that change constantly with the light, weather and tide. Despite the sense of seclusion, Milbanke never feels remote; instead, it offers that rare balance of privacy, space and direct access to the coast. It sleeps six people across three bedrooms and two bathrooms, and is perfect for families or friends.
The 10-minute walk from the cottage to Porlock Weir is as attractive as the destination, as the small, atmospheric harbour village that remains refreshingly unspoilt. Its pebble beach, ancient harbour wall, and mix of independent shops, galleries, and cafés give it a relaxed, lived-in feel, and the Bottom Ship pub and several well-regarded restaurants provide easy options for supper and a sociable drink. The South West Coast Path runs behind the upper garden at Milbanke, giving you direct access to miles of dramatic walking in both directions. Heading east, the path leads to Porlock village, Selworthy, and towards Minehead, where the West Somerset Steam Railway marks the edge of the moor. To the west, the route climbs to Culbone, home to England’s smallest complete Saxon church still in use. It then continues towards Countisbury and Lynmouth, with its historic harbour and water-powered cliff railway.
Milbanke makes an excellent base for exploring Exmoor National Park, a landscape shaped by open moorland, wooded combes and a rugged, often wild coastline. The area is well known for its red deer and Exmoor ponies, and it’s common to spot wildlife close to the cottage itself. Activities range from coastal walking and cycling to horse riding, kayaking, fishing and boat trips, many of which can be arranged locally. Historic Dunster is also within easy reach, with its medieval streets, independent shops and impressive Norman castle overlooking the village. The nearest bus stop is in Porlock Weir making day trips possible with no car. Whether days are spent exploring on foot or simply watching the sea from the garden, Milbanke offers a slower pace of coastal life in one of Exmoor’s most memorable settings.
