Stables Cottage is a traditional two-bedroom holiday cottage in Eskdalemuir, surrounded by the forests, hills and open countryside of Dumfriesshire. Sleeping four guests in two fixed beds, or up to six using the double sofa bed in the living room, it suits families, couples and friends who want somewhere genuinely rural. The interiors are comfortable and unfussy.
A multi-fuel stove anchors the sitting room, the kitchen has a large table with room to cook, eat or spread out a map, and the upstairs king bedroom is unusually bright thanks to its large garden-facing windows. A second double bedroom and the bathroom are downstairs. Behind the cottage is a private enclosed garden that isn't overlooked, useful for children and particularly welcome if you're bringing a dog. Superfast fibre broadband means being remote doesn't have to mean being disconnected.
The countryside starts as soon as you step outside. Walking and cycling routes run directly from the property, with forest tracks stretching for miles and Roman forts and prehistoric stone circles adding interest to local routes. Red squirrels, deer, owls, badgers and hares are all found nearby. Bikes can be stored under cover beside the cottage, and the quiet roads have proved popular with cyclists and walkers alike. The Eskdalemuir Community Hub is less than two miles away and has a café, while Samye Ling Monastery and Tibetan Centre is 2.5 miles from the cottage. Its temple, gardens and distinctive Tibetan architecture make it one of the area's most unusual places to visit. Previous guests also mention wild swimming, woodland walks and Bessie's Hill among their favourite local outings.
This is a sparsely populated part of Scotland, so it pays to arrive with supplies rather than expecting a supermarket around the corner. Deliveries are available from Morrisons and Asda, if you want to plan ahead, using the postcode DG13 0PL and selecting Stables Cottage from the options. Moffat is about a 25-30 minute drive and offers shopping, cafés, various take-aways and a change of pace. The wider Dumfries and Galloway countryside opens up possibilities for longer days out, but Stables Cottage works just as well when you don't travel far at all. A walk from the door, a few hours on the bikes and an evening with the stove lit can easily fill a day. The owners live across the courtyard and are available if needed, while the cottage and its garden remain separate and private. Free-range chickens live on the grounds and livestock graze nearby, so dogs must be kept on leads outside the enclosed garden.

The enclosed garden behind the cottage is private and not overlooked, with space to sit outside and let dogs off the lead. Covered bicycle storage is beside the cottage, and parking is directly outside in the courtyard. The owners live across the courtyard in a separate house.
Additional Information
Superfast fibre-optic broadband, utilities, bed linen and bath towels are provided. Well-behaved dogs welcome; they must not be left unattended and need to be kept on leads outside the enclosed garden because of free-range chickens and nearby livestock. Smoking is not allowed indoors.
