Gallery Apartment puts you right among the galleries, independent shops and harbour streets that give Kirkcudbright its reputation as Scotland's Artists' Town. This spacious first-floor holiday apartment has two bedrooms, with additional sleeping space on the sofa bed, and the harbour is only a two-minute stroll away. Inside, the refurbishment has kept enough traditional detail to give the rooms personality. The living room has a broad bay window with a window seat overlooking the street, and the separate dining room includes a decorative original fireplace, traditional pine dresser and grandfather clock. The main bedroom raises the stakes with a super-king four-poster bed and en-suite shower room. A flexible second bedroom can be made up as a king or twin, and the family bathroom has both a walk-in shower and jacuzzi bath.
Kirkcudbright is small enough to explore on foot, so you can discover much of the town without moving the car. Artists have been drawn here for generations, and that connection is still visible in Kirkcudbright Galleries, working studios and the independent creative businesses around town. Broughton House and Garden was once home to artist E.A. Hornel, while the Stewartry Museum and ruins of MacLellan's Castle add another layer to the town's history. Dark Space Planetarium and Dark Art Distillery offer two very different alternatives, and there is no shortage of places to stop for food along the way. Bakeries, delicatessens, cafés and restaurants are woven through the streets around the apartment, making self-catering decidedly optional on some days.
The Solway coast is close enough to make beach days an easy addition to a town break. Dhoon Bay, Brighouse Bay and Carrick Bay are all stated as being around five to 15 minutes away, bringing sandy shores, coastal walks and opportunities for wild swimming within a short drive. The surrounding hills and coastline are also good territory for walkers and cyclists. For a longer outing, Galloway Forest Park combines lochs, mountain biking, wildlife and some of Britain's darkest night skies. Back in Kirkcudbright, the harbour makes a pleasant last stop before heading upstairs. The appeal of Gallery Apartment is the contrast: beaches and open countryside are readily accessible, yet your front door is in a town where dinner, a gallery visit or a wander by the boats requires little planning at all.
