About Bakehouse Cottage

Bakehouse Cottage is warm and welcoming, and the perfect place to forget your cares and enjoy the beauty of the Gloucestershire countryside. The charming stone cottage is on Minchinhampton Common, and you can just step outside the front door into acres of grass and meadow, where wildflowers flourish in the spring and butterflies and birds abound. There is space for four people to stay in two bedrooms, so it is ideal for couples and families with older children. With two excellent pubs - The Black Horse and the Amberley Inn - both within easy walking distance - the location could not be better. We are proud of our new community shop and café situated in the local church.

The National Trust own and manage Minchinhampton Common, so you may find yourself sharing your morning cup of tea in the sunshine with a curious cow. Children and dogs adore having so much space surrounding the cottage, and it is also a favourite with golfers (one of Minchinhampton's three golf courses is on the common) as well as joggers and cyclists. Amberley also has two excellent pubs for a night off cooking.

Minchinhampton and Nailsworth (a foodie heaven with fabulous shops, cafes and restaurants) are within walking distance and Stroud is three miles north of Bakehouse Cottage and a short drive. Stroud has a multi-award-winning farmers’ market as well as a great range of other places to shop, eat and drink, so you always have a choice of delicious food whether you purchase it to prepare and serve back at the cottage or choose to have it freshly cooked for you. Amberley is also well placed for visiting popular Cotswolds villages such as Bibury and Painswick.

Local attractions include Woodchester Mansion and Park, while slightly further afield are Slimbridge Wetlands Centre, Berkeley Castle, Westonbirt Arboretum, Cotswold Water Park and Cotswold Farm Park. Bath, Bristol, Oxford, Cirencester and Cheltenham are all within an hour of Bakehouse Cottage, so you can easily plan a day or evening in one of these fantastic towns or cities then return to the peace and serenity of your Cotswold cottage.

The beautiful landscape is the biggest reason people love visiting the Cotswolds, and there is no better way to enjoy it than on a countryside walk. Whether you stroll alongside the Stroudwater Canal or push yourself on a stretch of the long-distance Cotswold Way footpath, there is a walk to suit everyone regardless of your ability or the season.

The owners of Bakehouse Cottage have another adjacent cottage, Bread Cottage, which can sleep up to four adults, or two adults and two teenagers. Both buildings, whose names recognise their part of a former bakery, have been renovated and restored to a high standard to offer a wonderful Cotswold stay.

Location (The Cotswolds)

Accommodation Comprises:

Bakehouse Cottage is a beautiful Cotswold stone building that was converted from a former bakery with the view of being a home, rather than a holiday let. The owners have used quality fixtures and furnishings to ensure guests feel welcome and comfortable.

Downstairs:

  • The large, original warehouse door has a smaller door fitted, and it is through this that you enter the cottage. There is space to leave coats and boots, as well as to securely store bicycles. There is also a washer/dryer in here for guest use if it is needed.
  • Stone fireplace with a log burner as a focal point of the cosy sitting room. There is comfortable seating where guests can relax and watch TV or a DVD, or sit and read one of the books the owners have provided for guests to enjoy during their stay. Large windows overlook the common and let in lots of natural daylight. This room is a lovely space to be whatever the time of the year or the weather.
  • Separate dining area with a table and chairs to seat six people.
  • Kitchen which is another welcoming space with waxed floorboards and a range cooker adding to the country cottage charm. The kitchen includes a good variety of utensils and equipment. It is perfect for a relaxed breakfast thanks to a table and chairs in front of the large window that overlooks Minchampton Common, and a door leads directly outside.
  • Downstairs wetroom with a shower area, WC and handbasin.

Upstairs:

  • There are two bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs.
  • Master bedroom which is dual aspect with fantastic views, proper storage, and a comfortable king-sized bed.
  • Second bedroom which is a spacious twin, and also dual aspect with lots of natural light and a wonderful outlook.
  • Bathroom with a bath where you can stretch out and soak tired muscles after a long walk, as well as a WC and handbasin.

Outside: Whilst there is not an actual garden, guests have direct access onto the common with plenty of space to spread a picnic blanket and relax (folding outdoor furniture provided). There is private, off-street parking.

Additional Information: The cottage is not suitable for children under the age of six. One well-behaved dog is welcome with prior agreement from the owner. WiFi, utilities, towels, sheets and a basket of logs are included with the cost of hire. Bakehouse Cottage is a period building, and therefore some of the doorways are lower than average. Discounts are offered for repeat guests and bookings of two or more weeks. Short breaks are possible at certain times of the year, depending on availability. Smoking is not permitted in Bakehouse Cottage.
