The Loft is a self-contained annexe set above a garage, reached by its own external staircase and completely separate from the main house. As a private hideaway rather than an add-on, the owners have shaped it into a comfortable space for two, with everything in one open-plan room that works perfectly for one or two people. The bed, seating area, and dining space sit naturally together without feeling crowded, and there's enough room to unpack, settle in and stay awhile. Beyond the main room is a proper kitchen, not a token one. It has a full oven and hob, fridge and microwave, along with the sort of equipment that lets you actually cook rather than just reheat. Small details make a difference here: extra pillows and blankets, blackout blinds, books, DVDs, board games and a sound system with CDs. It's a space that encourages slower evenings, whether that means reading, listening to music, or just switching off without screens.
Outside, the hot tub sits in its own private spot, ready for use when you arrive. It’s screened from view and feels genuinely tucked away, making it easy to use at any time of day. On clear nights, it’s a good place to sit and look at the sky, and during the day, it’s just as tempting after a long walk. You have free parking on the driveway, WiFi throughout, and self-check-in via lockbox, so arriving is straightforward. The Loft looks out over gardens and open fields, with footpaths leading directly into the surrounding countryside. The Black Horse pub is about ten minutes’ walk away and is a favourite with guests for good reason.
Thorndon is a working Suffolk village rather than a tourist centre. It has a strong community feel, a village shop run by volunteers, and a church with striking medieval stonework. The countryside around it is gently rolling, with farmland, hedgerows and quiet lanes where walking feels unhurried. Eye is two miles away and has an attractive market town layout, with its castle mound rising above the church, independent shops, cafés and a small brewery taproom. The 95th Bomb Group Museum gives an insight into the area’s wartime history. Norwich, Ipswich and Bury St Edmunds are all easy day trips if you want city life, while the Suffolk Coast is under an hour away.
For days out, Framlingham Castle is one of the county’s most impressive historic sites, while Minsmere is outstanding for birdwatching. Aldeburgh and Southwold both have strong identities of their own, from beach walks and fish and chips to galleries and independent shops. Dunwich tells the story of a medieval town lost to the sea, and Orford combines a striking castle with a working quay and smokehouse. Closer to home, Thorndon’s network of footpaths and quiet lanes makes it easy to explore without driving at all. This holiday cottage in Suffolk offers a balance between seclusion and variety, with plenty to do but no pressure to do any of it quickly.
